Just got the initial Mountain Jam 4 lineup on WDST Radio Woodstock. Here is what I picked up.

Gov't Mule will headline playing two set shows on Sat. and Sun.
Levon Helm (I would guess he will headline Fri.)
Michael Franti and Spearhead
Dark Star Orch
Grace Potter and the Noctournals
Medeski, Martin, and Wood with John Scofield

That is all I picked up. Not a bad starting point. They said they will announce more acts in the future. Looks like no ABB. It was nice to dream. It is gonna be awesome anyway!!!

The lineup sounds great. Where's Robert Randolph though? Let's not forget the Drive by Truckers! I like Mule on Sat and Sunday. That's as it should be.

The way it's listed I would think Levon Helm will headline Friday night. I have never seen him live. Can anyone tell me how his band is live?

I think that's a possibility. I am of course hoping Mule headlines 2 nights, however, that may be the third surprise. If Phil does join the rest of his buddies, It's possible that Mule won't headline 2 nights, or maybe Levon won't headline and will take the spot before the headline.

Last year they used a side by side stage set up and only one band performed at a time and the other stage was being set up while one was being used. This year there looks like a few more bands so maybe there will be a third, small stage. The year before last they had a second smaller stage in another area. so it was hard to see a lot of bands.

I liked the side by side stage a lot and hope they use it again.

Just for curiosity's sake, does anyone know if The DTB will be opening any dates for Santana the same weekend? If not, I wish they would book them for Mountain Jam. They're way overdue, after all!

Not for anything Doug, but the Drive By Truckers are not a headlining act nor even a lead into the headliner.

I personally don't want the last two spots of anyday to be any artist that needs polishing. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, while she may not have the fan base yet, deserves higher billing because they have it together as a band and Grace has a great voice and they have some exceptional songs. I believe that Sharon and the Dap Kings do as well, Sharon certainly has an exceptional voice from what I've heard so far, though I haven't seen them live yet.

Let's face it Doug, bands with a lot of boys making noise are a dime a dozen. I felt that way about many of the secondary and third level acts that have been given a stage at various Warren organized events through the years. Nothing made them stand out, not a voice, or a musician, or the songs or the sum of all the parts.

One of the big issues I had with last year's Mt Jam was having to sit through bands that had nothing that made them exceptional - they didn't have a great guitarist or other musician, nor a great singer and not even any songs that stuck out as exceptional. While I may not have loved Umphrey's they had a lot of exceptional musicians in the band. That made caught my listening attention. I don't want to diss this band or that, but I think that the general overall level of the festival needs to strive for EXCEPTIONAL MUSICIANSHIP in the two last spots of the night at the very least and I wouldn't mind it in the last three spots of each night.

I agree, Angel. I think they really need a second major headliner for Friday. While Levon is great, I just don't see his band cutting it. At least for me anyway. I think the Derek Trucks Band would fit the bill nicely. If they have already been booked or are opening for Santana that's one thing, but otherwise, I just don't understand why Hard Head can't make this happen. I guess I'm being selfish.

Have to disagree here. I don't love the Truckers but they are pretty popular and I think they are certainly at least a lead in to a main act. They are also pretty good musicians. I think it's a pretty good coup for MJ to get a band like this and probably says a lot for Warren's panache in the music world.

I have to weigh into this Drive-By Truckers debate. I saw them open for the Bros at Va. Beach and they were TERRIBLE. I mean it was painful to listen to. Sloppy guitar work, off-key vocals, guitar tone that can (and did) cause hearing damage (loud and very shrill) And, Patterson Hood came out for the ABB encore "One Way Out" and just butchered his solo. If anyone has the Instant Live from 8-12-07 listen to the first guitar solo in One Way Out, it's the Drive By Truckers frontman and it stinks. I'm not into bashing bands but I really don't get this one.

They don't have the chops of Warren or Derek but they make pretty good music.
