The leader of the guitar army.

I cherish the memories of the 3 chances I got to see them after Hughie got the band back together. After the original band broke up I never thought I would have that chance again.
Ride on brother Hughie. Miss you too brother Billy.

What a show that was huh?
I saw both of them and the Marshall Tucker band in '76 or so.

There's a song in the breeze
Hear it singin' through the trees
As it blows along, you will know the tune
Time can heal, so I've been told
If you believe it, you'll grow old
All the time we need together is coming soon

Hughie was well loved. Here is a quote from his daughter:

''He had no idea he was who he was..He was the nicest man, the most generous man in the whole world...Any time he could help someone, he did....He did a free show in Ohio for the troops this year and he was so excited. Then there was another one in Tampa for a charity for mentally handicapped children...He just wanted to be a part of something to help someone else”

Hughie is my all-time favorite musician. It goes back to seeing the Outlaws back in the 70's. I was dissapointed to see him languishing with Skynyrd for almost a decade, stepping in when they needed a big time guitarist, but being given the cold shoulder in the end.

I was delighted to see Hughie reform the Outlaws. They were on the right track, with a great sound of 2 drummers and Chris Anderson on guitar. This wasn't some BS thing like Skynyrd, Molly Hatchett, the MTB or the current Outlaws, they were legitimate, like the current ABB.

I was so sad when he died. I wrote this poem:

Today when I awoke, I found my grass turned brown.
I wanted to hear music, but I couldn’t hear a sound.
The crashing waves were silent, a constant ebb no flow.
I waited for some music, but the tides all day stayed low.

I looked above, I couldn’t see, any riders in the sky.
I couldn’t hear the love song, or the one that just went by.
The reason is, I lost my friend, and I’m hurting in my soul.
I just wished, for one more day, he stuck around for some rock and roll.

The only way, that my tides, will be forever high,
And I can hear that love song, and see riders in the sky,
The only way, my old brown grass, will turn back into green;
Is to try and hurry sundown, so I can go and dream.

I wanna say the year was 2005. The Outlaws had just gotten back together. I was in Chicago and noticed they were playing the HOB the weekend I was in town. Brofan came down and we caught the show. I had seen Hughie a few times with Skynyrd but never with the Outlaws. An amazing night of music. Definitely a "greatest hits" show, which was fine with me. I think I knew every song.

I used to put the top down and my Jeep and blast Green Grass and High Tides thru the speakers on the roll bar and just drive around. He was an amazing talent.
