Pink Floyd song, Learning To Fly, off the album, A Momentary Lapse of Reason.

Pink Floyd Learning To Fly lyrics

Into the distance, a ribbon of black
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
Standing alone my senses reeled
A fatal attraction holding me fast, how
Can I escape this irresistible grasp?
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted Just an earth-bound misfit, I
Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings, I thought I thought of everything
No navigator to guide my way home
Unladened, empty and turned to stone
A soul in tension that's learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I
Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,
My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night
There's no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, A state of bliss
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

The first Sheila in the Aussie Floyd performance of Great Gig in the Sky comes close to destroying my marriage every time I see them. Their cover best the original by far, although I still consider it a Pink Floyd song.

Me too. Love that tune. I used to love when Blue Floyd did it too. I think my other favorite is Interstellar Overdrive.

Darn, that was going to be my choice! Only because I was sure no one else would pick it. So much for that.

Hard to pick one song, as their albums are like one big song and should be heard as a unit.

I can't really consider any Pink Floyd that was done after Roger Waters left band as "Pink Floyd". Maybe you can call them "Pink Floyd Lite, just add Waters!"

One my favorite songs about getting older by anyone is Free Four

The memories of a man in his old age
Are the deeds of a man in his prime.
You shuffle in gloom of the sickroom
And talk to yourself as you die.

Life is a short, warm moment
And death is a long cold rest.
You get your chance to try in the twinkling of an eye:
Eighty years, with luck, or even less.

So all aboard for the American tour,
And maybe you'll make it to the top.
And mind how you go, and I can tell you, 'cause I know
You may find it hard to get off.

You are the angel of death
And I am the dead man's son.
And he was buried like a mole in a fox hole.
And everyone is still in the run.

And who is the master of fox hounds?
And who says the hunt has begun?
And who calls the tune in the courtroom?
And who beats the funeral drum?

The memories of a man in his old age
Are the deeds of a man in his prime.
You shuffle in gloom in the sickroom
And talk to yourself till you die.

Hmmm. I'm not so sure. The first minute or so of the guitar solo break in "On The Turning Away" right as the freight train gets rolling on that tune, that is some heavy Floydian riffs, IMO.

I was going to post something like this as this is how I feel too. Ironic that the thread starter listed a song, post Waters.

But this is just how I feel.

I figured as soon as I posted something like this, someone would come along and insert Syd Barrett for Roger Waters anyhow.

I'll be the first one to say that The Division Bell is pretty much a Gilmour solo album.

But, A Momentary Lapse of Reason contains some incredible, worthy of the name music, IMO.

Breathe. However my favourite version is Blue Floyd with Jimmy Herring from a show in Atlanta in 2000.
