The Ox came to my mind first when I saw this thread title.

Of course very subjective and much disagreement to follow, I'm sure.

But many a bass player in the rock bands we love claim ole John as inspiration.

I don't know who it is, but he or she is probably jamming with the greatest guitar player of all time. When you figure out who that is, let us know, will ya? We've been arguing about that for a loooooooong time.

Jaco Pastorious
Stanley Clarke
John Entwistle
Jack Bruce
Alphonso Johnson
Otiel Burbridge
Berry Oakley
Tim Bogert
Paul McCartney
John Paul Jones
Roger Waters

Dave Schools

2 greats I would have loved to have seen live (one of them gone now):
Larry Graham Jr.
Charles Mingus

My top 4 no order
The OX
Jack Bruce
Tim Bogert
Berry Oakley

It is one thing to play fast ,but it is another thing to play fast Heavy and with conviction the avove Bass players all did that.

Best bassist, not living...of course, for me, is Berry Oakley. And, got to give Jaco props, too. He was awesome, as well.

Best bassist I've seen who is still living...Oteil. He's a monster. And I'm mighty partial to Pedro, too.

Its hard to say who is the best , but if I had to I would say Jaco just because he took bass playing to a different level . The book " Jaco " is a great read , he was a troubled soul but what a monster on the bass .

Greatest? Thats a tough question.
But my favorite right now is Dave Schools.
I was listening to WSP - "Live In The Classic City"
last night and Dave just tears it up.

I won't get into who is best, because I don't know. Y'all listed a bunch of great players here, but one you didn't is George Porter, Jr. So I'll toss his name in the hat.

For those who want to sit at the feet of a master, he has a regular Thursday night gig at the Maple Leaf in NOLA.
