Reports out of ESPN headquarters this morning say that "Baseball Tonight" analyst Steve Phillips has been suspended from the network, after an affair with a 22-year-old production assistant turned into a special edition DVD release of Fatal Attraction.

According to the New York Post's rather lengthy deconstruction of events, Phillips had a brief fling with a fellow ESPN employee named Brooke Hundley this summer. He ended it rather quickly, which did not go over very well. She allegedly began harassing Phillips, his wife and even his teenage son—who she friended on Facebook by pretending to be a classmate, and then grilled him for personal information about the family.

The final straw came when Phillips' wife arrived at her home to see a strange woman coming down her driveway and getting into a car (which she promptly smashed into a pole while trying to make a quick getaway.) The woman had left a very creepy letter in the front door, addressed to Phillips wife. The full original letter is available on the Post website [PDF], but here are some of the bullet points laid out by Hundley:

• She and Steve first slept together in a St. Louis hotel room, but he assured her that she wouldn't get pregnant because of his vasectomy.
• How and she Steve love to text back and forth with detailed plans on how they would like to sex each other
• An uncomfortable amount of detail about the activities of her children
• How the Catholic Church will totally understand if the Phillips got a divorce, so that she and Steve can be together
• She's 22 ... but not stupid!
• A graphic description of Steve's birthmarks (on his crotch and inner thigh), just to know she's legit.

In a written statement, Phillips confessed that he had three sexual encounters with Hundley and then broke it off in July. Almost immediately after that, the woman began making phone calls to his wife, leaving voicemails, sending inappropriate texts, and making even more inappropriate Facebook overtures to his son. He says he believes her to "obsessive and delusional" and police have become involved. Nevertheless, Phillips is suspended for at least one week and his wife has filed for divorce.

This is not the first time Phillips has run into this sort of trouble, nor is it the first incident involving the Baseball Tonight team. When he was GM of the Mets in the 1990s, Phillips had to take a leave of absence after an affair with a team employee. See also: Reynolds, Harold. There's a chance we won't see him on any ESPN network before this baseball season ends and then after that, who knows what will become of his tenure at the firm.

Expect a lot more on this before the day is over, obviously

Thank god for baseball fans, but sad for his wife and kids. I absolutely cannot stand him as an announcer. He disagrees with Joe Morgan on almost every point and continues to argue throughout the course of a game. I think he is the most overbearing, obnoxious announcer ever and am overjoyed that he will be kicked out the booth. Hopefully it's permanent.

The guy is scum.

Dude , A 7 year old little leaguer could have better points to make than Joe Morgan , so can you actually blame Philips for having arguments with him ?!?!?!? ( as another aside I hate 3 man booths for baseball ) I don't know how John Miller , who calls a decent game , has put up with him all these years !!!

When I read "ESPN baseball analyst suspened ..." I had my fingers crossed hoping it was Joe Morgan . I still watch Sunday Night Baseball occasionally in hopes Jon Miller will beat him senseless while on air . Morgan is the most arrogant and obnoxious sports commentator I've ever seen . Cosell was too , but he had class at the same time .

Back to the matter at hand , I'm sorry for the family of Phillips . What a selfish thing to do .

Guess I'm the only one who finds Morgan listenable....hate him if you want, but there's no denying he knows what he is talking about. He's almost always right and I, for one, find his tell it like it is style refreshing in this age of announcers who never played the game shoveling their happy horsesh!t. Morgan doesn't care whether he is liked or not and I dig that.

Just my .02.

I try to ignore all that and just concentrate on his game analysis. As far as that goes, he has no peer. Who's better, Tim McCarver? Please.....

Joe Morgan is the John Madden of baseball. He's a master of the obvious without the personality.

He does know the game, there's no denying that, but I am not a fan of what he contributes in the booth.

Steve Phillips will get what he deserves.

I totally agree. But I live in NC and am restricted to network baseball broadcast teams.

Bob Brenly and Len Kasper are the best baseball broadcast team in the business....they were talking up the ABB's shows all week when they were in Chi-town. They are also the most musically knowledgable sports announcers there iare They got to more shows than I do....LOL

The absolute worst - and I mean the WORST - is Hawk Harrelson. What an ass.

No the worst is Ron Santo. Dementia and ineptness never a good thing especially in a broadcast booth.

Well, you've got a point there. I loved Ron as a player and he has been very courageous in dealing with his diabetes (both legs amputated) but he is absolutely painful to listen to.

I never thought Harrelson was great but he never bothered me that much. I use to like it when he would be on the Steve Dahl radio show back in the WLUP 1000 am days and let his guard down a little. I think he has a hell of a sense of humor. However I can see where his extreme homerism and bi polar depression when the White Sox are losing could be annoying to a non Sox fan. Add to that his hillbilly sayings don't go over real well in the Chicago market. Jay Mariotti use to hammer him in his Sun Times columns for that reason.

I can't stand his contrived "Good Ole Boy" persona (I don't buy it for a second) and he is more guilty of the "When I played" method of broadcasting than most. He was incredibly critical of his predecessor as GM (was it Roland Hemond? One of the classiest baseball men ever) and he did a disgraceful job when he took over as the Sox GM. He has always been an arrogant SOB and he has pretty much run every one of his partners out of town sooner or later. The only reason Darren Jackson has lasted as long as he has (or is he gone too?) is because he is the classic yes man who never challenges Harrelson on anything.

Hawk should flown the coop 20 years ago.

FYI Stoney and Hawk are partners now. Dj moved to radio with ed Farmer. IMHO Hawk and stoney are really good together FWIW.
