you must have good hardware Derek! Vista clogged the crap out of one of my old optiplexes to the point where i reformatted and put xp back on.

also am running win7 on a POS inspiron 8600 i have (512mb ram/p4 1.6ghz) and its running like brand new! (NOT KIDDING!)). The only thing i'm struggling with is this new home networking features, i've set up 7 on two home computers but both have new homegroup names and i cant seem to get them to talk to one another. but i have all day to figure that one out....

i've been messing with Office 10 in a VM, another cool windows thang....

dont panic! the data is still there provided she doesnt mess with it too much, you can take the Harddrive out of that laptop and hook up to a usb converter thingie and copy the data to a different computer. I have a five in one converter that does that, it was only about $15 at CompUSA (before it closed)

I just upgraded from my old Windows 98 PC to a lenovo laptop with XP. Lots of people recommended against Vista. For what little I do, this thing works like a dream. But I have a question that you may have answered, Linnie. I have some files on my old PC that I need. I can't burn them to a disc, since that part of the computer stopped working, and I can't send them in an email because I can only use dial-up with that dinosaur. So what is the easiest way to get those files to where I can put them on my new computer? It is all the info I entered into Family Tree Maker, mostly.

hi alan!

see the post above, get the HD out of your old PC and use the IDE (or SATA) slot to USB converter and hook it up to your new pc. you should be able to browse to them. since your computer sounds old i'm guessing you need IDE to USB.

Thanks, Linnie. That sounds easy enough. I was hoping there was a way to do that.

I've had zero problems with two PC's on Vista for a few years now. The one I'm using now, and usually use for personal stuff, runs non-stop. I never shut it off unless I'm traveling for a few days, which has lessened in the past 18 months. It goes and goes and never crashes, requires a re-boot... nothing. The only time it re-boots is when it updates itself.

My other PC - a business laptop - isn't on with the same non-stop frequency, but in similar fashion, it's never caused me any trouble. I've never understood the complaints with Vista, unless someone has old hardware drivers.

That said, I'll probably upgrade those two boxes to Win7 over time.

But my first taste of the new Windows will probably be a new workstation that I may order this coming week. I'm looking for something very powerful that will breeze through video editing and rendering. That looks to be a Core i7, 64-bit machine. I've been waiting on buying one till Win7 could be configured with the build, which will happen this week. I've got a few days to decide on final specs, but I'll probably be pulling the trigger soon.

I'm one who hasn't had any problems with Vista, too, but am really encouraged to hear the good reviews (here and elsewhere) on Windows 7. Hmmmm ... upgrade or not?

I have never had a single problem with Vista either... I have heard from MANY people that hate vista but have never had a problem with it themselves..... If you have the recommended hardware there shoudl be no issues.

I think it is just "cool" to hate Vista/Microsoft these days.

Kinda like beating up on the Post Office, who in my opinion does an incredible job, but is a target for endless undeserved ridicule.

WOW, i agree...

I have said that USPS is the single greatest business in america. Who else can you pay less than 50 cent to deliver something from your door in Florida to a doorstep in Alaska? It is an unbelievable asset, not to mention they are often cheaper than UPS.

Just got windows 7 as well, and lovin' it. (Although my control is a little messed up, we just had to reconfigure the entire computer, which was running on vista, because my father-in-law thinks the mafia took it over remotely, but its working a lot better now!)

Been using it since early May.... I'm liking it quite a bit as well.

Vista had initial compatibility and/or resource issues, but those have been mostly dealt with... I like when people refer to Win7 as "what Vista should have been".

MS put XP on the No Patch list for TCP/IP: http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9138007/Microsoft_No_TCP_IP_patches_ for_you_XP

so its time to move on.

Just got a new Sony VAIO loaded with Vista but am sending in for the free WINDOWS 7 upgrade. I haven't had any problems with Vista but have heard that WINDOWS 7 is superior.

Why does Windows 7, which was released to the general public yesterday, need 23 updates today?

(not really a question but a statement)

I agree with Deb, moemoe, and others--I've had no problems with Vista. I got this HP computer in January, and it's been just fine since.

Why should I "upgrade" to Windows 7? Serious question--not being a smartass, for once...

Thanks!
