Longish story here from a strange encounter I had following last week's Merriweather show.

So I attended the Merriweather show last week. I thought the ABB set was stellar. As I've stated before, I have just been unable to get into Panic for a number of reasons, not the least of which is John Bell's vocals.

Anyway, I attended the show with my wife and another couple who had never seen either band live before. We stayed at the nearby Sheraton and, post-show, we were told that there was a little bar next to the hotel that was probably still serving food, so we strolled over to the bar to grab a burger and beer.

The bar was sparsely populated and there was only one other table seated, and we were seated behind that table. Discussing the show, our first-timer friends had differing opinions of the performances. She liked the Allmans better. He preferred WSP. I chimed in that I just don't dig Widespread and that I am not a fan of the lead vocalist.

About this time, the college-aged semi-hippyish girl at the next table turns around with a look of disbelief and says, "You mean, JB??" I said, "Yeah, I'm not really a fan of his singing." She turned around and talked to her boyfriend, who then said, "I'm curious. What do you think of Jimmy Herring?" I said I liked him quite a bit and I thought he was great.
"Look", I said. "I know tons of people love WSP and that music is a very subjective thing and some people like some things and some people like other things and that's ok. I've been to a few Panic shows and I don't like their music. Its not to say they they aren't great musicians. I just don't care for them."

So the young lady turns around again and says, "Well JB is my DAD!" She gets up, holds out her hand and drops 2 sticky, stinky green nuggets of a leafy substance into my hand and says, "Here! This is from my dad. He'd want you to have this!"
I didn't even know what to say to her. I think I said, "Hey I'm sure you're dad's a great guy. I wasn't being unkind, just stating my opinion to my friends."

I tried to return her gift, but she wouldn't hear of it. "Maybe you'll like my dad's music better," was her answer. They got up and exited the building.

I don't know if she really was JB's kid. I guess its possible. The bands were staying at The Sheraton that night. Either way, just a crazy story that I'll not soon forget. One of the most bizarre "concert" experiences of my life.

Makes perfect sense to me. His daughter should know what it takes to listen to his voice and if that's the cure so be it. Sounds like a great way to end the evening!

Wiki says he is married but does not mention any kids....

My buddy and I were talking about the Panic crowd, definitely it seemed to me that they draw a much younger crowd...despite the age of the performers, curious....I mean it isn't like the members of Panic are a bunch of young kids themselves.

Anyhow I thoroughly enjoyed them opening the Raleigh show.

Their fans do some dancing though.....not that I'm opposed to that.

They're a pretty good band, and to their credit have built a very big following. To me, they're kinda like theDead. And I liked the Dead, too. But compared to the Allman Bros, The Dead were always kinda white to me. To me, just so much more vitality w/the Bros. But that's what makes horse races, as the saying goes. Be kinda boring if we all dug the same sh*t.....

The nugs were a nice surprise, I bet!!!

At the Raleigh show Sunday night, JB came up to the lawn section during IMOER. He was standing right next to us, drinking a beer and talking on his cell phone. Why he decided to come up to the lawn to take a phone call, I have no idea. He was there for about 10 minutes before a bunch of kids recognized him and started taking pictures. He took off once a crowd started forming around him.

You guys don't throw off on JB's voice too much. Obviously he's no Gregg Allman. He's kinds of like listening to Dylan, a bit of an acquired taste.
