hi, i was wondering what your thoughts were on the best 2003 recordings? i have about 10 2003 shows, and the 3-21-03 beacon show just jumps out at me. great sound, and they were really on fire that night.

anyone else have a 2003 recording that just smokes that they could recommend?

peace ya'll

steve

This is a good question and I always like to hear what others think.

Atlanta has gotten all the attention it deserves (at least according to the tapes I have)

I like from the Beacon 3/25 (awesome POST didn't make DVD) & 3/29

From the Summer 7/02, 7/13 8/05 & Red Rocks (Forgot the date) Are all incredible recordings of great shows

Regarding the Red Rocks show, I have one copy with another one the way. The one I have has a fair amount of wind noise on it, which gets progressively worse as the show goes on. The guy who taped it patched from a guy with great mics and in a good location, and he even had those wind sock thingies. Is this noticeable on anyone else's copies? I've held off spreading it, hoping the other sources will be a little better.

I have a 8/10 Raleigh show that was taped by Barry Shields that I think is very good.

And a 7/26 show. I forgot who the the taper was but I think I got the show from Jim Benjamin.
But anyway the taper was up front between Warren & Dereks' amps and the guitars are straight out of the amps and not watered down by the PA.
I love to CRANK this one up.

I like the 7/26/03 that Bill taped in Burgettstown, PA. He had a very good set-up in the security pit and it doesn't sound like a typical Aud recording. It's close to SBD quality.

I am a tough grader on shows...I don't give out many A+ ratings unless they are close to perfect!

That being said here are some stellar shows:

Yes, Burgettstown smokes... A+ quality. Its true, almost soundboard-like because it was recorded right from in front of the stage. I don't believe I've heard another audience recording quite like it from "any" year. A taper's dream.
Also, Both Chicago shows were also A+...beautiful quality.
Atlanta is a solid "A".
Beacon 3/15/03, 3/20/03, 3/21/03, 3/22/03.. solid "A" rating.

Don't forget the instant-live gems! Woo Hoo!

All in all a very fine summer of beautiful recordings!

Actually KC Jimmy...It was 8/1/03 when Warren quoted Dickey's FE solo on Statesboro.
That was the Garcia tribute show at Montage. A wonderful show!

Sorry Jimmy, My friend...

Hey There - Todd Hastings also taped from the security "pit" right at the stage for the 7/26/03 show - and it's also grrrreat!!

You know, sound quality-wise, the little talked about Atlantic City show is very nice - was that 6/28/03??

I think over time, August 2003 will go down as a transcendental month in the fashion that May 1996 was for the ABB, or May 1977 was for the Dead. Every show I have heard has just been incredible...and they apparently kept pace into September.

Agreed Jonesy. I think it actually started July 29th in Chicago, which should get a vote for show of the year. Doing Dreams, Whipping Post and Mtn Jam back-to-back-to-back for the first time in a loooooong time. And I believe that was the first night Warren did the little snippet of Blue Sky during Mtn Jam. The following night Liz Reed into Layla wasn't too shabby either. I was at the 3/21 Beacon show and these Chicago shows and I might like the 7/29 just a tab more than 3/21.

I know there are multiple versions of shows out there and I have a great sounding show from July 26,2003 but my nod is to the night before, July 25,2003. To me the sound and mix is perfect, the guitars, vocals, organ, and drums.
