goes my daughter, Rachel.

This morning I had to leave real early to go to Macon for a class I had to take for work. Around 10:00AM, my wife tried to call me. I'm in the class and couldn't answer her call, so I text messaged her and said, "I'm in class right now. What's up?" She just replied, "Call me when you get a break." So, a few minutes later, we get a break and I call her. She tells me, "Rachel had an accident. She totaled her car." First thing I asked is, "Is she alright??" She said, "She banged her knees up and bit her tongue, but otherwise, she's alright. She's at home in bed asleep now." My next question was, "What happened?" She told me that Rachel was pulling out of the subdivision headed to school. A person was in the turn lane about to turn into the subdivision and had the view of the travel lane obstructed. Rachel thought she had it clear and entered the roadway....right in the path of an oncoming Land Rover. Rachel saw her coming and tried to steer left, while the driver of the LR did the same, and they connected the right front corners of both cars. Rachel was spun around to the right and landed perpendicular to the exit lane of the subdivision and the other car left the roadway and went down a steep embankment that is across the road from our s/d entrance. How she didn't roll over is a miracle. The LR driver was uninjured. Rachel was cited for failure to yield right of way.

Now we have to replace her 1990 Honda Accord that we've had for 5 years. It was old and had a ton of miles on it (around 250K,) but it ran like a top and I just did $700 worth of work on the AC, and it recently had two new front tires put on it. You'll notice in the pictures that it has a different color hood on it. She had one other accident over a year ago and I fixed the damage myself. This wreck is beyond my ability to handle the repairs, unfortunately. Here's how her car looked at the tow yard.

Here's the other car. Not as bad as I thought it would be. It looks fixable.

When I got home from Macon, I came in, Rachel was on the couch. I walked up to her, motioned for her to get up, and when she did, I wrapped my arms around her and held her tight. She cried (she is usually pretty stoic) but I held up pretty well. I'm just glad my baby is OK. When I think about her friend who was brain injured in the wreck in July, all I can say is, "There by the grace of God goes Rachel."

Nice "purple" Honda. Glad she's alright. I blasted a station wagon broadside on a motorcycle going very very, very fast, here I am by the grace of God. Don't take nothing for granted folks. Count your blessings.

I understand how you feel completely and it is scary. Karen had an accident in July of 2007 and totaled her car. It was a great car, a Mazda,, and she just had it completely checked out and it cost a lot to do that. It was a single car accident. We have some strange curbs in the road islands and I'm sure she was driving fast, got distracted and ran up on the curb and then off and the airbag blew out. The car was totaled.

She walked away and the paramedics, EMT checked her out. She seemed OK at first but the next day we realized she had serious injuries. She has injuries to her spine and neck and some brain damage. She has been in treatment for over two years now and cannot work due to seizures and pain. Seizures are under control but the pain gets really bad sometimes. She has physical therapy and she does her own brain therapy with Zuduko books. She spends several hours a day. She has short term memory lose, but she made a lot of progress on that. She has so many physical problems and gets depressed too.

I am so glad Rachel wasn't hurt. She is so fortunate in that. I know airbags save lives but the force of the airbag is what caused Karen's injuries. If you met her you would think she is fine, but, she stays home when she's not. I am so worried about her future. Karen has a Masters degree in tax accounting and had a promising career. She can't do that anymore and will have to find another vocation when she is able to work again.

It is so scary. Thank God Rachel is alright.

Whoa Dave. I'm glad she is OK. She went through a very frightening experience.
Very frightening. Hope she doesn't have more soreness in the morning.
Give her a big ol' huig from all of us.

The things young girls will do to get a new car! That two-tone (hood) paint job wasn't happenin' anyway!

Just yankin' your cord, Dave! I'm glad to hear that Rachel is okay! Cars can be replaced, but loved ones are cherished for life. Sounds like that guardian angel was passengering along.

Please tell Rachel that everybody in Peachville has her on their mind!

Rusty, we called the car "Barney" because of the purple and green paint scheme. We painted the car purple for her (her favorite color) as part of a deal for her to drive it through high school and beyond. She rear ended someone last year before she graduated and I fixed it in the driveway myself. She asked me when I was going to repaint it to match and I told her I wasn't going to paint it until I knew she wasn't going to wreck it again.

And there's the story on the colors.

Personally, I always wanted kill Barney. The large, purple teddy-monster - not your daughter's car. Just glad Rachel's okay!

I told Rachel that you really don't understand just how violent car crashes are until you've had one. I told the story of my last crash, at age 19 in 1980, and showed her photos of it. I have knee trouble now on account of mine, but I was lucky I didn't go through the windshield. I did hit and shatter it. Hopefully she has a new found respect for driving and will take more time and be more cautious from now on. I hope this is the last one for her.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes for Rachel.

Dave - it's so scary when you think of what could have happened. My Billy was in an accident where the other driver was at fault, but was killed. Billy's car was totalled, but he just had some bruises - amazingly lucky. It's something he'll carry with him for the rest of his life. Hope Rachel is emotionally OK as well as physically OK.
