I hate to give advice to someone who hates having women tell them what to do, but I must. You need to go on the road. Become a roadie or drive a truck but you need to travel and get a better sense of yourself so that you know who and what you are and if others don't like it, too bad. The road will drive you to exhaustion, but it will also bring you to knowledge about yourself you would otherwise not get. You have to spend a certain amount of time just being wasted to pull back the layers of b.s. life puts on you and have realizations because somewhere inside your spirit knows who you are and what you need and all these b.s. jobs you've had don't fit you and just demoralize you more and make you more disgusted and cynical and rightly so. You can't find out what you really want to do, till you know WHO you are, and with your entire situation, going on the road is my RX. (and I'm not saying that to get you out of the forum, I have told several people sincerely get yourself a bottle of Jack Daniels and go on the road, and when they followed my advice aside from funny stories they came back better).

I shouldn't get into this, but Gina -- advice aside -- please don't pretend you're a therapist, for everybody else's sake? A lot of your posts are about addiction, and yet you advise people to get out on the road and stop drinking? Offer friendly advice all you like, but when people have real problems, you don't have all the answers either.

Hey, dude. Good to see you open up. Love that you helped the cat. You don't need to go out on the road and find yourself. If you like your life, great. If not, find out what you like - try different things, talk to us here, do whatever you need to do. Don't abuse your body - not at 39 - you are about 10 years my senior, and I can't even go to a show anymore without earplugs, and I can't stay in the Beacon for the whole show without coming up for air - results of smoking and drinking too much - my body at just under 30 is beat up a bit.

One thing I wish for you is a woman who loves and respects you and what you believe in. I have one. We are a team. We love each other dearly. We have 3 dogs, and various other pets. We share music, laughter, nature and other interests. She doesn't dictate anything to me unless I'm being an as*hole, which I can be sometimes, and even then she let's me pretty much figure it out for myself.

The only advice I have about women is a 2-parter. 1) No woman you find is perfect, just like you and I aren't. If it feels right, it is - don't listen to anyone who likes to analyze relationships - you can't, and 2) Don't look for a woman in bars, etc. Like I said, figure out what you like, and find a group of people who also enjoy whatever that is. Then go hang out with them - there are clubs, etc. for everything these days. Take your time, and someone will come.

That's great advice, JoJoDancer. Somehow getting a bottle of Jack Daniels and jumping in your car trying to find yourself didn't seem like the way to go. Which reminds me of something a friend's mother said to me almost thirty years ago: "Damn all this growin' long hair, smokin' dope, and running up and down the road trying to find yourself."

SouthernMan,

You did not ask for any advice but sometimes people like to give it whether you asked for it or not. Try riding a bicycle, if that still hurts your knee than sit back relax and let middle age take control. Hope this helps you out Brother. Oh, and if you do take up bike riding than get a CD walkman and check out Marleys choice for music in his post on the Anthing Goes Board, Question about Blue Sky thread. It really is a great choice.

Be safe,

John [Edited on 5/14/2002 by NYCScammer]

Shoot, I've met some real nice women in bars before -- haven't married any of 'em, but that's still not to say you shouldn't seek them out there -- if that's your muse, if a bar is where you'd feel comfortable finding "Mrs Right" go for it. Still in all, JoJo's is an excellent post.
NYC Scammer's advice is excellent. I bike ride a lot, and at the end of a day, especially if it's not been a very good one, it really helps to put things in perspective. Start slow, then build up -- just like a classic ABB guitar solo.

Guess you're right Stephen - I just meant that it shouldn't be considered the only, and primary, place to find a mate. That has become a pervaisive misconception these days.

Marley I don't try to promote drug addiction, I just understand it's necessity while people get themselves together sometimes. Right now a friend of mine has a bad alcohol problem but I'm not gonna preach at him, I know he has to solve it in his own time and way. I also know the pain he has is not easily solved, it's lifelong problems. So I listen and I drive and I care. Most of us who have lived thru the 60's and 70's have some stories to tell. Road trips are cathartic for many people, maybe it's not the best thing in his case but for a lot of people it does open up new vistas and introspection to them. That's all I meant.

Southernman, I'm sorry about your Dad, being estranged with someone when they die packs a heavy burden; you also oughta know sometimes there is nothing you can do to be approved or good in enough in someone else's eyes, it's not your shortfall, it's their refusing to see you for who and what you really are and the best thing you can do is try to forgive them for their lack of giving you what you should've had. That's not an easy thing either, but you'll be okay. I remember the night I met Eric Clapton and he liked me, and it meant more to me than I can say. You gotta get out and have moments like that cause heroes and others will give you a more unbiased opinion of you than family members do sometimes. Like Duane said, you gotta get out and share what's inside yourself with others, that's the only way you're gonna have any fun at all. Hang in there.

Keep talkin' to us dude - the journey's inside - not anywhere else. You can do it in your living room - or anywhere.

Hopefully opening up to us will feel good. I for one will listen if it helps.

Here's a suggestion, SouthernMan. If you don't already play, go to your local guitar store and buy a good, inexpensive guitar. You can get a good one for $300 or so. Maybe even a little less. Sign up with a guitar teacher, and start taking lessons. It will be difficult at first, but it will give you something to look forward to every week, take up a lot of the free time you have while practicing, and give you a great deal of pleasure as you get better. As your playing improves, look for blues jams, open mike nights, etc in your area. Find some other guys to play with. You'll get a great feeling of accomplishment that will help you forget about some of the bad things that have happened in your life. You might even be able to play your Mom some pretty music. And since women love guitar players, you'll be a babe magnet before you know it!

No, I'm not Marley Brant. I am a Bob Marley fan, and so are my parents -- and that's why my name actually is Marley.

Marley Brant, like most people who bear this wonderful name, is a actually a 'she.' I'm proud to be an exception to that particular rule.

I am the devil, Mr 666, Satan, or to most of my friends, the root of all evil. I am responsible for all of the world's trouble, all of the pestilence and disease, murder, fudgepacking of little boys, the absolute hatred of everything that is good. Oops, sorry about that, I guess I am the Catholic church. I always get that confused.

I am a fat girl from Minneapolis. I am addicted to colored paper and broken clay pots. Once I ate a bug, but only because JAG made me. I only own one Skynnyrd album and NO Molly Hatchet.
