An article I found on the net by somebody calling themselves Snidely Whiplash that just struck a chord with me...

quote:
Do you know any of these fine folks? Ya know who they are...

The "snob" is certain their brain is larger and more capable than that of ordinary folks. They are convinced their opinions are not only the right ones, but the smart ones as well. They are convinced their thought processes are superior, thus leading to superior results.

Their own opinions of their wit are way overrated and it shows. When they speak from on high to the rest of us their disdain for we less than they is rather evident, no?

They hold us mere mortals in contempt for our daring to have an opinion when they have already figured it all out. Our offerings amuse the pedantic and snobbish ones. They shake their stuffed-with-brains heads at our colloquial musings. Seems they are humoring us by even tolerating our involvement in anything they venture into.

They are as I often describe, malcontents. The malcontent is the erudite who is just so much smarter than the rest of us that they can offer their denigration of things most hold dear, or at least acceptable, yet the uber-brained will opine how what we find acceptable and passable as being flawed.

Often times their presentation and justification for the malcontent status is based on some sort of ephemeral point or aspect pertaining to whatever issue that only their super-enlightened status allows to be seen. Those of us who do not feel the same way they do about something is proof we are just a little to dim, too obtuse and too unsophisticated to be in their presence.

They cement their snobby/malcontent status by loving the things many hate, or conversely hating the things many of us love. It's that "I am smarter, a deeper-thinker, and thus just more enlightened than you. I do not jump on bandwagons of popularity, and in fact I, the snobby malcontent, laugh as you mortals pretend to be so smart."

They employ this pseudo intellectual erudition to appear thoughtful and deeper than we. They see things we mortals just can't connect to.

One of the best ways I have ever found to determine if one of these delightful persons is on your horizon is to listen to them most carefully.

Do you know someone who is a contrarian? They are most likely a snob too. The contrarian holds opinions that generally go against the conventional wisdom. Their reading material speaks to different things than what most folks like. Their musical loves embrace narrow parameters and largely denigrate what the mainstream enjoys. Same with movies and TV.

Since they are so much smarter it is important that they denigrate the things mortals embrace. And the things they tout a love and appreciation for are often obscure to many of us. See, that's again because they are so much more intelligent than the rest of us. Their tastes are more highly developed.

Another dead cert giveaway that you know a snobby malcontent is to listen to their denigration of their surroundings and the people with whom they are forced to associate. Where they live sucks. The people that live in their region are idiots. They are forced by circumstances beyond their control to have to subject themselves to we unsophisticates. We are not smart enough to see we are mired in the muck. No, such a realization only manifests in their ultra massive brains.

One could conclude that to the snobbish malcontent indeed, ignorance is bliss, and they cannot possibly be blissful because they are so not ignorant. It's like happiness is a sign of small-brained and blissful ignorance, and they ain't having none of that, now are they?

And all this time I thought a snob was someone who wiped off the mouth of the bottle when you passed it to 'em.

Indeed. A more apt description of elitist liberals I have never seen.
