Gov't Mule
By A Thread
By Doug Collette
September 21, 2009

Gov't Mule's By A Thread might be the closest thing we ever get to a modern day Warren Haynes solo effort (unless rumors of such a project from the last few months turn out to be true.) Every individual element of style favored by the guitarist/vocalist/songwriter is covered within the album's hour-plus running time, which might make for a splintered sound except that his connection to Gov't Mule as a group is absolutely unyielding. And vice-versa.

This recording's title might refer to the infinitesimal degree of separation between the work of an single artist and that of a full-fledged unit. As cleanly captured by producer Gordie Johnson, Gov't Mule wouldn't work so well if keyboardist Danny Louis, drummer Matt Abts and newly recruited bassist Jorgen Carlsson were merely backing Warren Haynes. The dual-structure of "Inside Outside Woman Blues #3" , for instance, would be rote self-indulgence rather than catharsis if this was not a unified quartet. Likewise, the similarly-structured changes of "Scenes From A Troubled Mind" wouldn't work so effectively if the four-piece were not in sync with each other as well as Haynes.

The intelligence Gov't Mule's frontman displays in his composing as well as his playing comes to the fore on the subdued "World Wake Up." Haynes' pondering on the state of the world might sound precious were it not for the stately gait of the band as they enter--hear Carlsson signal himself with a high note run--or the fact this track appears after ten other cuts where dirty Texas blues like the opener "Broke Down on the Brazos" (with ZZ Top's guitarist extraordinaire Billy Gibbons) appears alongside "Forever More," a ballad with an acoustic foundation that sounds like nothing so much as an Elizabethan folk ballad (with references to Edgar Allan Poe to boot!) Warren Haynes makes his real statement as a member of Gov't Mule, foregoing pompous pronouncements in favor of cogent observations: "Logic fails/Greed prevails/It's not too late today..." By A Thread thus further's the credibility of the band, individually and collectively.

Listening party?
No live Mule, just a sample of the audio of the cd?

If it included a free metro card or a meet and greet with the guy who puts the CD in the player, then I would be interested. But it does give you the chance to buy a VIP package to the Mule's 12/30-12/31 Beacon shows for only $449 plus fees (regular price $449 plus fees). Way to go Mule!

Simple. You go to a big room in Brooklyn (make sure you have a ticket). Someone puts a CD in a player, prolly with a nice sound system. And you listen. Maybe even you get the chance to buy some merchandise at regular prices.

Sounds like the Mule is going to play at this party. It's listed on the tour page.

They are releasing a cd. I have yet to see Warren behave in a way that is disrespectful to fans.

I would believe that the Mule will be performing - does not sound like you'd be invited to just listen and look at a cd - remember Roseland - one hell of a cd party!!

I would agree, they usually do right by the fans. I have been to the Dose cd release party (Iriving Plaza), the Life Before Insanity (Irving Plaza) and also Deja Voodoo, which I think was the one at Roseland a few years back. I believe Warren sang Van Morrison's Ballerina for the encore that night which was very cool.

Not at all interested in a CD listening party if the band isn't gonna be there and I would think they would announce if they were gonna be there. They are also tacking on eight dollars for shipping. I'll just wait and have my own personal listening party when I get the CD. I don't preorder anything anymore after all of the fiascos with the last couple of releases.

It did not say it was a release party but a "listening" party. If the Mule was playiing that fact would have been front and center in the announcement I would think.

My guess is that Warren will be there. I would suspect Danny might be able to show up too since he isn't too far from the city. Both Matt and Jorgen live in LA. If the band isn't playing it is because they probably can't all be there.

One alternative as suggested is to sit in your room by yourself and listen when the cd comes out. Or not to listen to it at all. Those are both ways to go. Your choice.

I'll be there in Brooklyn to show my support to Warren and the band.

I ordered my cd at the Mule Van in Buffalo and don't have a receipt or anything but I am going on blind faith that I will have no problem getting a ticket since I do live in Brooklyn and have been at everything else through the years. Supporting a band and their music is kind of like a relationship. Until the relationship gets where the negative far far out weighs the positive, you just hang in there. By a thread perhaps, but you hang in there. I may have been disappointed in certain things the last few years, but the music has never disappointed me.

My appreciation of Warren's music can never be disputed and to me that is the bottom line.

Hey - just got an email about tickets going on sale (it came from being
on the Bowery Ballroom mailing list) and it had this in it:

On Sale Now
9/30 - GOV'T MULE Special Listening Party Followed by a Performance - Brooklyn Bowl
11/6 WARREN G Music Hall of Williamsburg
11/10 WARREN G Bowery Ballroom
11/13 LENKA Mercury Lounge
11/15 - BAND OF SKULLS - Music Hall of Williamsburg

On Sale Tomorrow, September 23 at Noon
10/15 RED WANTING BLUE / EMERGENCY SERVICE / RUSTIC OVERTONES / LOVE & LOGIC Mercury Lounge

On Sale Friday, September 25 at Noon
10/9 BOB WEIR, ROB WASSERMAN & JAY LANE ARE SCARING THE CHILDREN - Brooklyn Bowl

So, at least according to this, there will be a performance after (and I assume
that would be a performance by Warren and GMule). It also lists the Bob Weir
and Rob Wasserman show at the Brooklyn Bowl.

There are no tickets for sale for this. If you followed the link it takes you to the Mule's announcement page. You have to have preordered and hopefully they will not allow guests who haven't preordered. I've already been asked by a few people to put their names on my request. Guess what I told them. Preorder the cd and put your name on your own request.

Right. My email didn't have a link or anything.
I only forwarded the email because it had the statement about a
"performance" afterward. I was just trying to provide some information
regarding whether or not GMule would play after the listening party.
I thought this email provided some support that they would play.

This is likely going to be similar to what they did at the Virgin Megastore in 2006. I would bet there is an opportunity for autographs.

No worries, just clarifying in case anyone though they could buy tickets without preordering the cd.

Gov't Mule

The intelligence Gov't Mule's frontman displays in his composing as well as his playing comes to the fore on the subdued "World Wake Up."
