This is purely a hypothetical and I'm not looking to stir up controversy. However, I've been thinking about this recently because I've been listening to some earlier shows and was thinking about how I do miss Dickey, even though this current band smokes. So, the question is, if Dickey were to come back, which guitarist would you rather he replace - Warren or Derek? Let's assume that the band wouldn't want 3 guitarists because it would make them too much like Skynyrd.

To be honest, I don't want to think about that... BUT, personally I feel that Warren & Dickey have much more chemestry than Derek & Dickey, so I'd have to go that way.

Derek, without a doubt. That doesn't mean that he's not worthy or anything, but the Dickey/Warren tandem was, IMHO, as inspired as Duane/Dickey. I think Warren is better served in the "Duane role" than the "Dickey role" anyway, and that's the role he'd play if Dickey came back.

Besides, who would write the songs?

I guess this is a interesting question especially since the are answers are only opinions cause Dickey won't be invited back, and probably wouldn't come back. Three guitars could work though. Southbound in Atlanta in 02. Warren, Derek, and Jimmy Herring!

How about a 1 show "Outlaws" reunion for your 3 guitar attack?

I would also have to say Warren as I think him and Dickey had a better chemistry than Dickey/Derek. I think the best chemistry, besides Dickey/Duane of course, was Dickey/Jack. Man, that guy could play his ass off! I also always thought Duane/Clapton was an unbelievable combination, dare I say better than Dickey/Duane.

I don't know, I really like the late 99 shows!

nope. all three. i wouldn't care if it was like Skynyrd.

however, i belive that Derek is on his way to great things, so perhaps he would volunteer to leave. (doubtful)

I'm a huge Jack fan. But I don't know if I agree with that. Only in that I think Jack is so extremely talented he could find guitar chemistry with a farm goat! (I mean that as a compliment!) I believe that Warren & Dickey had a special thing going...

Derek.

If he had to replace one of the current guitarists. My favorite lineup is the Warren/Dickey lineup. But this one smokes so I win either way

I'm not sure '99/2000 can be used as an indicator of how Dickey and Derek would play together. Dickey was FAR from his best in 2000 (the previous year, too), and Derek has improved a lot in the last 4 years. But actually, I'm going to talk my way out of that now - because I don't think Dickey can play what Derek is playing these days.

Dickey's better right now than he was in 2000, but he's not at his peak. Derek and Warren are; or at least, Warren is at his peak and Derek is good enough to match it. (The age gap between them says everything to me about Derek's potential.) I love Dickey Betts, but is his playing growing and improving like Warren and Derek's? I don't think so. Honestly, I don't think he can hold a candle to them right now. Even if you could get Dickey back in the band, you're not getting the Dickey Betts of 1989, or 1996.

I agree with Frank. Warren writes the damn songs and has for quite a while. It is too bad that 89-97 weren't more productive in the studio. Dickey/Warren/Woody were a great tandem.

Also overlooked are the shows Jack/Warren played together. Completely blow me away and they didn't even really rehearse. It sounds like they had been together for years.

I enjoy it now though. Between ABB/DBGS/Mule/DTB and the many other side projects we see tons of shows each year. Or at least I do.

I think there are 6-7 of them. From two different runs. Dickey was MIA I think.

Funny, in the last couple of days i was playing with the idea of posting almost exactly the same topic. I didn't because i thought it would turn into yet another "there's no ABB without Dickey" rant.
Anyway i personally think that a 3 guitarist line-up might work.
Because as much i still would like Dickey to return someday i would hate to see Derek or Warren go. Dickey is "the legend" but this current line-up "rocks".
Because of their distictive different sound and style any comparisons with Skynyrd are beneath the point. Anyway there are plenty bands nowadays with 3 guitarists.
3 guitarists does not mean they will be getting on each others toes.
As a mather of fact what i really would like is a line-up with the three of them
(Derek / Dickey / Warren) but with one of them "stepping back" or actually leave the stage for a few songs. the three of them together could play on the long jams.
Think of it ... it could be great.
The particular songs that Dickey didn't like to play could be played by the others and
since Warren is "the hardest working man in the rock music bizz" he could need
some R&R too every now and then ha-ha.
Since Marc's percussion is almost as big as a drum-kit there are already 3 drummers / percussionists in the band.
3 lead-guitarists
3 lead-vocalists
3 drummers
a triple treat.
