So sorry to hear of Jim Carroll's passing(That link didn't work for me. From what I've heard, cause of death was a heart attack.)

When I was a teenager I loved his Catholic Boy album(hey,I'm a Catholic Girl). And the album cover was great too--a picture of Jim w/ his mom and dad. He was 59.

I made a correction; Jim was 59(b. August 1950)

I know who Jim Carroll is thru the Velvet Underground album LIVE AT MAX'S KANSAS CITY. This was a recording of Lou Reed's final engagement with the band on August 23, 1970. VU fan Brigid Polk made the recording which was released in 1972, the first legitimate bootleg.

Jim Carroll, also a friend of Lou and the band was with her that nite, and you can hear his comments throughout the recording. The most famous one is his requests for a "double Pernod from the downstairs bar" and also some Tuinal.

I've always enjoyed his writing and do have one of his cd's and have always found him interesting with his connections to the NY scene of Lou and Patti and Andy and... A tumultous life lived here ... rest peacefully Jim.

Holy smokes, just got in from the Pat's game and apparently I'm dead....

Some of you know that my login "jcb" stands for Jim Carroll Band. I was in high school when they were big, my friends gave me the nickname.

"Basketball Diaries" is a classic, a must read. Frankly, it's amazing he made it this far.

Very sad. He will be missed...

Jim was a legend. I actually got to meet him at a reading he did here at the University of Oregon for his collected works in the early '90's. He was a rock. He had that straiight, orange hair and ice-blue eyes and he looked past you like a good NY boy. He said: "everybody misquotes Shakespeare, so I might as well give my take: 'That which does not kill you....only makes you sleep until 3 O'clock the next day!"
My band plays a song of his called Three Sisters that always gets the crowd dancing. Kerouac was a fan of his writing and Keith Richards dug his rock and roll. Not a bad accomplishment. If you watch the movie, The Basketball Diaries, which is mediocre at best, there is one impressive scene where Leo Dicaprio is being schooled at a shooting gallery by Jim himself. The only worthy scene in the whole movie. He will be missed.
