There's a thread going on here called Favorite Beatles Covers and it brought to mind the David Crosby interview in the new Rolling Stone (issue 1087, 9/17/09). It seems that Columbia Records found out that Crosby, Stills and Nash were currently unsigned and asked them to do a covers record. CSN is selecting the material; they already started working on it before the current tour but according to Crosby "I don't think we've gotten anything I would keep." At one point the interviewer says, "Sounds like the album could take a while to finish." Crosby: "Uh, yes. I can tell you what's very damn hard to try: a Beatles song. You wrap yourself around one of their songs and make an arrangement and try to do it. And then you go and listen to the Beatles' record of it and go 'Ah......no'. It's too amazingly good."

CSN does a great version of "In My Life" on their forgotten 1994 release AFTER THE STORM.
In fact I just picked up that CD used for $1.99 with their other forgotten 90s release LIVE IT UP (which contains no Beatles covers on it).

WOODSTOCK
"This is only the second time we've performed in front of people. We're scared **** less." They opened with "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" before launching into a harmony drenched version of the Beatles' "Blackbird."

I'm seriously hoping that their entire Woodstock set gets released as did the Joplin/Winter/Sly/Airplane & Santana sets did....prob. won't since Neil wouldn't allow his performance w/them to be on the soundtrack or in the movie...I can dream tho......

Most Beatles covers are reduced to elevator muzak. The Dead did a version of Revolution this year that absolutely horrible. It really just shouldn't be done.

The Phil Lesh Quintet with Warren and Jimmy Herring did "I'm The Walrus" in Charlotte some years ago and it was incredible. The audience provided the ambient background noises of "Hoo Ha Everybody Smoke Pot!" It was truely one of my wildest musical concert moments ... ever.
