He was born on this day in 1941 and truly was one of the greatest soul singers of all time.

Yup he was.
Interesting to note that he wrote most of the songs he performed which was uncommon at the time with some help from Steve Cropper.

Every one I've talked to around Macon about Otis remembers his smile.

I've posted this a couple of times, but whenever Otis comes up I try to share it with everyone. John
As I'm sure most of you have realized, Gregg has changed the words from the original version of Whipping Post by inserting the phrase "chained and bound" after the first line of the refrain "Sometimes I feel like I've been tied to the whipping post...chained and bound...sometimes I feel like I'm dying"
What many of you may not realize is the origin of this change in the lyrics. My brother, Twiggs Lyndon, suggested to Gregg years ago that he add the phrase as a tribute to Otis Redding, who had a song with the title, "Chained and Bound."
Initially, Gregg seemed to add the phrase every now and then, but lately it appears to me that it has become a permanent part of the song.
So next time you hear Gregg sing it, take a moment to reflect on the great Otis Redding. After all, he is the reason the words are there.

Thanks, IP. I don't think I've ever seen that picture of Jai with Otis.

From Bill Graham's autobiography:

"By far, Otis Redding was the single most extraordinary talen I had ever seen. There was no comparison. Then or now.

This link also has quotes from Phil Walden about Otis.
