I've pre-ordered a mono box; should have it late next week. Mono for me because that was the intent of the boys and George Martin. Good enough reason for me.

Does that include Sgt. Peppers? Somehow I can't believe that a copy of that exists in mono.

BTW, the mono sets are going to be produced in limited supply and once they're gone, they're gone....

At least that's what DEAD.NET told me when I paid $99.99 for the Winterland '73 box. And then they authorized amazon to sell it for like $59.99. That "bonus disc" wound up costing me an extra 40 bucks. Never again....

Im going with the mono set, and since its going to be limited, even more reason to get it. Yes, all the albums will be in mono including Sgt Pepper.

*Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road and Let It Be are not included as they were originally recorded in Stereo.

According to many of my audiophile friends, Mono is the way to go. The Beatles orginal recordings were done in Mono, with a stereo mix being somewhat of an afterthought. Btw, I've heard both, and the Mono mix is much better, and truer to the sound of the Beatles. People need to remember in the sixties, that stereo hadn't really caught on in a big way to the masses. About the only people that had quality stereo systems back them were people that were heavily into jazz and classical music. Pop/Rock music at the time were recorded in Mono, because that what sounded best on the AM radio that people listened to at the time, and on record players that most Beatles fans had.

Anyway, here's a link to a discussion from Audiogon (which is audiophile site)

Doesn't anyone find an iota "RnR Greed" in any of this???!!!

For years EMI has been squeezing new Beatles product out to the market, everything which has been previously released. From the "#1" CD to the LOVE album. It's going to be a high price to pay for these recordings which every Beatles fan already owns in some form. Yes I know that this is the remastered catalog, but I'm sure somebody got to be satsfied with the Beatles CDs already on the market.

Another collectible for all the Fab Four fans who have to have everything put out with the Beatles name on it. Don't get me wrong, I'm a HUGE fan! It just amazes me how many times this music has been packaged and re-packaged - with every new edition selling a zillion copies.

I wonder why they didn't include both the mono and the stereo version in the same pacage at no extra cost (a la the Beach Boys reissue of "Pet Sounds"). (slaps self in the forehead) Oh yeah! Because they're the Beatles!

michaelsio,

From what I understand the "Mono Mix" is going to be a "limited edition" run. Once they're going they're gone.

According to Amazon they are going to press (burn?) more than the originally announced run of 10,000.

From the Amazon website:
"09/02/09 UPDATE: The manufacturer has informed us that they will be producing additional mono box sets due to high demand. While the mono box set will still remain a limited production item, it will no longer be limited to 10,000 copies for the U.S. market, as originally reported."

I have read that as well. I need the mono mix, as I grew up with that format both on the lp and listening to am radio. The Beatles intended it to be heard in that format at the time. I expect the quality to be superior to what is now available.

Chuck, only Abby Road and Let it be were Stereo only.
When the Beatles mixed Sgt. Peppers, they did it in Mono and Stereo. I remember reading that the Beatles did not supervise or participate in the stereo mix, but Geoff emerick, the engineer, did it. so they released the lp in both mono and stereo. I have copies of both lps, and there are some differences....

Comment about the MONO versions from an advanced promo copy:

This is the way you remember them. Not scrubbed clean, but emanating from one speaker in the dash, one speaker underneath the spinning wheel of your all-in-one record player. It's not about revelation, but basking in the joy of the music itself. These are the CDs you want to buy to listen to while you're having a party, while you're cleaning the house. They're more MUSICAL!

Listening to the stereo CDs is being an archaeologist, digging in deep, studying the nuances that have been revealed by the cleansing of tender-loving brushstrokes, which have revealed all the parts, flaws and all. Listening to the mono CDs is just like being in the sixties, albeit a sprightlier, cleaner version.

Let's put it this way. When you go to the show do you need to sit up front or a healthy distance back, where the sound blends properly, near the soundboard, where the engineer mixes the sound. If you want to see the performer spit, if you want the adrenaline of proximity to a star, you pay extra to sit in the front row. But if you want the best sound, you'll be disappointed, the vocal will be unhearable, the balance will be tweaked, you won't be happy.
