Most people probably aren't aware, but tomorrow, August 31st, marks the 40th anniversary of Bob Dylan's controversial appearance at the 1969 Isle of Wight Festival.

The 1969 Isle of Wight Festival was the second of three large rock n roll gatherings that occurred on the island (the '68 festival featured Jefferson Airplane and T.Rex). The '69 festival featured The Who, Moody Blues, Joe Cocker, Richie Havens, Tom Paxton, Free, The Nice, The Band, and the star Bob Dylan. Dylan, who remained in seclusion since his 1966 motorcycle accident, did not show up at Woodstock. However, he did decide to play the Isle of Wight Festival which occurred a few weeks later.

Lured by Dylan and the other artists, about 100,000 European people descended on the island. John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Jane Fonda, Elton John were all in the audience.

Dylan was backed by The Band, and despite rumors that he would play for three hours, they only did an hour set. The festival was already two days old, and most of the people were tired and ready to go home. Nevertheless Dylan did play a strong show, and some of it was videotaped. Here are some clips:

(The Who's set was also partially videotaped:

The complete Bob Dylan setlist is as follows:

She Belongs To Me
I Threw It All Away
Maggie's Farm
Wild Mountain Thyme
It Ain't Me Babe
To Ramona
Mr. Tambourine Man
I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine
Lay Lady Lay
Highway 61 Revisited
One Too Many Mornings
I Pity The Poor Immigrant
Like A Rolling Stone
I'll Be Your Baby Tonight
The Mighty Quinn
Minstrel Boy
Rainy Day Women # 12 & 35

"She Belongs To Me" "Like A Rolling Stone" "Minstrel Boy" and "The Mighty Quinn" were released on the 1970 LP SELF PORTRAIT. The rest has remained unreleased, but has been widely available on bootleg for years.

Lastly, here is a great webpage on the 1969 Isle of Wight Festival, and many other UK festivals:

Actually this photo is of the 1970 festival which featured Jimi Hendrix, The Doors and the Who! That festival had 600,000 plus attendees. Quite a nice picture though
