This is a really good time to be an Allman Brothers fan.

Earlier tonight Kirk gave me a copy of the new CD and we listened to the first disk. 1970 was a simpler, less complicated time, when music could solve the problems of the world.

This Sony release, famABBly, is a dream come true. The artwork on the packaging is like a flashback for those that were there. Kirk's wonderful liner notes capture the era especially well. And the music. Oh, brothers and sisters, the music.

If you want to be surprised when you hear it the first time -- like I was -- don't read on, dear friends, because I'm about to tell you how incredible this CD is.

You may have read the setlists on the Web, but to hear it is beyond words. It starts with a Duane Allman spectacular Statesboro Blues. Just before the end of the song, I look at Kirk and say, "This is pretty good!" Then it wraps up, but Duane keeps playing ... he starts the second vamp ... this is an -extended- Statesboro Blues! Dear Lord!

Ace Doucette plays some killer harp, a little bit down in the mix -- but that's my only complaint about the sound. It's otherwise superb, better than either archive release. This was recorded on an 8-track mixing board and none of the tracks contains Berry's bass part -- the engineers had to recreate his track by subtracting it from the others, a feat of technical wizardry explained in an upcoming HTN article.

After four slide songs there's a Dreams that quite literally moved me to tears tonight. I don't believe I've ever felt this kind of emotion listening to a song performed by any other band -- I had to wipe my eyes and blow my nose. This is the song that levitated me to the front of the stage that fateful day, for any of you who recall reading about Atlanta Pop in HTN a few issues ago.

A couple of songs later there is an astounding Liz Reed. Then ... there is a Whipping Post for the Ages. Far different from other versions of this era, it feels like the boys are truly inspired to be playing in front of a festival crowd of hundreds of thousands. As yet I've only listened to it once, but I heard amazing things tonight. And, of course, the Mountain Jam -- split in half by a brief rain shower -- is superb.

This is very much a Kirk West production, from selling it to the label, to getting the work done, to getting band approval, to writing the surprisingly fine liner notes. I was very proud to have my first listen to it with Kirk. I also got a "Special Thanks" in the brochure for helping hook Kirk up with the folks who owned the master tapes about 15 or 16 years ago.

I still havenít gotten over the impact this CD had on me. Trust me -- get it immediately.

It's getting to the point where we need this phrase printed on a t-shirt, you know? It's an appropriate tribute that the year we lost Tom Dowd turned out to be such a fruitful one for the Allmans.

Current count: one new ABB CD, one DVD, the Atlanta Pop release 33 years in the making, the Stonybrook Archive release, Duane being voted the #2 Guitarist in Rolling Stone's poll, a live CD this coming spring, an outstanding year of touring - for the ABB and every family band - Layla, etc., the Tonight Show appearance, one Derek Trucks album, one HUGE Gov't Mule release (CDs/DVD) and the cementing of the new GM line-up... did I forget anything?

Thanks for the review, Hop - always a treat. I can't wait to hear the thing myself.

Wasn't the presale allegedly shipping starting a few days ago?????? Waiting........

My pet gripe..... the standard allow 2-4 weeks for delivery. Now, that time frame originated in the days of mules and wagons, and oxen and plows, and pathetic souls riding all night on horses with sacks of mail.... OK, give em 3 days to process an order, 2 days just screwing around doing nothing, USPS 3-5 days, and 4 days for the hell of it.... OK, there is 14 days, and that is with 6 days just porking the pooch.... really should be a week turnaround in todays world.....

I closed a credit card account a while back and they actually said my overpayment refund check ($1.33) would be issued in 30 to 90 (NINETY!) days. These are the jerks who charge you $29.00 if you are one day late? I sent them 42 notices for the BirdFee of $85 a day late repayment penalty, still awaiting a response.

So damn it, I'm mad as heck now, Where's my Atlanta Pop...... All your fault Hophead! great read.

Hey Bird, I think the shipping date was September 30th for the Atl. Pop...so I would actually start looking for it to show up anytime now....

As far as the credit card money...that does seem excessive....but I'm sure the Board that approves expenditures only meets once a month and if they couldn't get your account on the agenda it would have to be approved the next month - so that's about 60 days right there....the rest would probably be spent porking the pooch as it were.....

Bird72. I hear you man. They should pay you for having your money. Isn't it funny how they get you any way they can. I've been charged for going over my limit. I called them and asked why. Well we allow our credit card customers to go ove by 20% because we realize there may be emergencies. I then asked why in hell is there a limit? Go figure.

The important thing to realize is that banks and credit cards aren't in business for you the customer. They are in business to make money.

On the subject of Atlanta Pop I'm assuming they didn't ship until 9/30 so today would be the earliest you might received. Of course I went back to the website to check on my "order status" but couldn't seem to find anything like that.

I'm just impatient, haha. I know it should be coming soon. Pony Express to Montana usually adds a day or two...... Maybe in a few days... I REALLY am waiting on this one....

I called the allmanbrothersbootlegs.com page's Customer Service line, and my item has NOT been shipped out yet. The fact that the people on the phone didn't have any answers for me, and seemed confused and disinterested doesn't help matters any.

According them, my order is being "processed", and it won't go out for a few more days. Keep in mind that I ordered this 2 weeks ago...

Grrr...

Patience, I also ordered mine about two weeks ago. It'll get here. Hey while we're on the subject has anyone ordered and received DB Collectoors Vol#1 ? I've read that they are taking forever to ship and have been really bad at giving info on ship dates. I'd love to order it but I also want to make sure I receive it. And no this is not a DB bash

I think porking the pooch is about right, most companies don't really care once they have your money. An exception though in my experience, I purchased a Lexmark printer which wouldn't feed the paper corectly and I complained on Monday afternoon late and was delivered a new one on Weds. I have to say I was very impressed. Wish more companies made as effort as they did . (no I don't work for them)

Well my nice mailman brought me a nice cardboard box today. I opened it up and it had the Atlanta Pop poster but NO CD. WTF??? Nothing on the packing invoice about back order...but there is no charge on the slip either. I guess these are being shipped separately? WTF???

Anybody else get this package?

I think porking the pooch is exactly what this is...won't take long and I'll be doing a chargeback on my credit card...

I got my copy today and I couldn't figure out what was wrong with the bass. (I got on here to ask.) Mostly it sounds like a low, indistinct, almost sub-sonic rumble. It is hard to tell what note he is playing, or even if he is playing the same song.

The bass is so loud and distracting (with the problems above) that it seriously detracts from being able to listen to the CD. It gets a little better on the 2nd and 3rd songs of the second CD, but not much.

After reading what JudMc had to say, I wondered how that jives with what's on the home page...
quote:
A double CD of the Allman Brothers Band performing at the Atlanta Pop Festival in 1970 is being released in late October. Some of you may have heard a couple of tracks that came out on vinyl many moons ago. Imagine them, plus more, remastered to perfection.

What Hophead listened to sounded fine, maybe they burned JudMc's copy on Hi-Vals...

I can't say myself, I only have the empty box...
