Heard an interesting comment about central bankers recently that their primary goal was not to make money, but to manage debt. With enough indebtedness, the bankers influence and control over individuals, companies, or countries increases. In other words; debt was the path to real power.

If so, we're doing a great job of handing them the keys.

By keeping people enslaved to debt banks do make money. Money is the objective and debt management is the process to make money. This was the main plot of the The International and there was a line in the movie about the comment you heard.

Damn Swifty, you're right! I didn't remember the source till you referenced the movie. Good memory!

Well, movie or not, the concept made sense to me. It also accounts for historical comments from some central bankers, like the Rothchild's, who had a family member once say something like: "give me control of a nation's currency and I care not who makes the laws".

In a modern context, we wonder why countries like the China or the Saudi's keep buying out debt. Part of course is so we'll keep buying their products. But the other side - the darker side - is the control that we hand to them of our future as they own more and more of that debt. Power and profits - the ultimate combination.
