This song sure is across the genre map.

Bob Dyan, Original folk version

Jimi Hendrix blistering rock version that made Bob Dylan change his.

Gov't Mule with Dave Matthews and Brandford Marsalis. Very jazzy version with some Hendrix quotes. Very nice. This is off the Warren Haynes Benefit Concert Volume 8. Sorry for posting Warren but maybe I can sell you some for a good cause.

Going down memory lane, I remember buying JHE Smash Hits around 1970 (still have it) and being just blown away when I heard Jimi's version. A buddy of mine had an 8-TRK in his VW with an added on headphone adapter. We'd get stoked up and take turns listening thru the headphones to Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower and Chicago's "I'm A Man". Damn I'm getting old. The song will live on long after I'm gone.

I'll never forget Neil's show closing edition on his 1993 tour. Wow.

I can find something to dig on every version I've heard. Even the times in the garage with the other neighborhood kids growing up.

I thought the version Mule did w/ Kerl Denson at Mtn Jam was unique- very jazzy take on it...

Bob Dylan says Jimi's version is definitive, and Jimi made it "his song"

Micheal Hedges does a great version on his live from planet earth cd

I agree the song has been covered too many times.
For some reason one of my favorites is Richie Havens version.

Pretty simple but a nice spin off the original

Check out the Dead's version on the Dozin at the Knick CD. Jerry's soloing behind Bobby's vocals most of the song.

Very cool. Loved the Dead's Dylan covers.

Good call, Smatter. For me, this was the highlight of that particular set, along with the Doors tune "When the Music's Over." Ah, the memories. Karl Denson sounded great on the Mountain!

Good one, forgot that also. For trivia, Dave Mason plays the acoustic on Hendrix's studio version.

Not a bad version in the house!
