Think I'll be heading back home to North Carolina in about a month or so. I liived in Virginia since 1981, but I've always considered myself a "Tar Heel". Been going through some serious hard times lately, and Virginia (especially Northern Virginia), doesn't seem to be the place where I want to be anymore. Truth is, for all time I've lived here, it's never really felt like home. I'm really at a place where I want to be some place that's more small town, has a more "laid back" easier lifestyle, and yes, the cost of lving is a lot less. Truth is I don't need a whole lot, I just want things simplier. And living where I live it, that's not really all that possble. My sisters have really been on me lately, to come back to Carolina, and because of a lot of reasons, I think the time is right to do so. Ths is kind of a "big decision" for me, and certain parts of it, because of life circumstances are being forced, but nevertheless I'm more than ready to go. I'm really at a point I need a change. Now whether my wife is really ready for the "change" I really don't know, but in many ways we've reached a "crossroad". I know the life we have isn't making either one of us happy, and hasn't done so in quite a while. And many ways I've been "crashing and burning' for quite some time, and I can't keep on like that, and if something doesn't change .......... well, truth be told, I don't know how much longer I can keep going on. Appreciate any good thoughs, prayers, encouragement, ect. A change has got to come, and it's a bit scary, but it's a change that is necessary.

There is a musician named Brandon Rickman of the Lonesome River Band who has a wonderful new solo album out called "Young Man, Old Soul," and at his myspace page he is streaming some of the excellent songs from this new project. The song "I Take The Backroads" might help you make that decision.

Other songs to key on afterwards are "Wide Spot In The Road" and "Always Have, Always Will" with Randy Kohrs slinging some sweet slide Dobro.

Sorry to hear your having a rough time. It helps that your sisters are there and supporting. Lot of people are leary of change, its natural. But I really hope it works out for you. Could be just what the doctor ordered. Good luck Fred.

Best of luck, Fred. Change can be hard ... big decisions difficult to make ... congratulations on finding the courage to seek something better, more full-filling for yourself. Thoughts are with you.

Thanks eveybody for the kind words and encouragement. As of Sept 6, I'm cutting off my internet service. and after that if I want internet I'll be visiting a library. Beyond that, I'll be "heading south" sometimes mid to late September, so after the sixth, it'll be a while before y'all being hearing back from sibwlkr/cleaneduphippy as I'll be busy trying to "set up" a new life. Hopefully finding a new job and a new home, and reconnecting with family and "old friends" back in my old "hometown" (and yes, please continue the encouraging thoughts and prayers) that things will move to a better place. And I'm trying to hold "faith" in that. Change is "scary" but sometimes change is "necessary". And more and more, I need to be back where my family is, and where I still have some "old friends" living. One more thing, I know how I've been here on the WP over the years, and that will probably never ever change, because I do hold "strong opinions" about certain issues, and have no problems letting my views be known, but nevertheless, I hope people know I don't hold grudges against people that I've had disagreement with, life really is to short for that kind of "sh*t". I certainly do wish everybody around here the "very best". Truth is, we're all just "pilgrims" in this life journey, trying to do the best we can, sometimes we do good, and sometimes ...... Anyway, to each and every one of you, who may read this "You and yours take care". That's my wish and that my prayer to everyone, and I do mean that most sincerely.

Always follow your intution, gut feeling. When your gut says it's time to go be someplace else, you have to do that. North Carolina isn't a bad place to go to, Derek plays there regularly, Lana transplanted herself there and hasn't went anywhere else, so put on "Blue Sky" and sing along happily "going to Carolina, won't be long and I'll be there"...

Comforting vibes being sent your way.....Sometimes you have to take that leap of faith. If you don't, you'll spend the rest of your life wondering "what if". Good luck to you on your path

Best of luck with your decision man.

I too struggle with thoughts like yours altough I have no idea what your life is dealing you at the moment.

One thing that is helping me is letting go of the past. LORD knows it ain't easy, but that is exactly what he wants us to do, let it go, leave it in his hands. I am not completely there yet but have gotten a good start.

Again, not sure if that even fits your scenario, but for me...moving on and letting go seems to be key.

I think about moving back to Michigan from time to time, but it's cold there and there aren't any jobs, so I'll stay put
