NBC News did a small piece on this couple...turns out they were both 20 at the concert, locals, had just started dating, got married shortly after the concert, still live in the area and are still married after all those years.....now that is a feel good story:

Turning this thread into a spot for neat things that come out in the news on Woodstock

WLIW in NY did one last night.
They had some of the photogrpahers and a reporter from the Times who covered the event as well as event goers, all giving their impressions.

Interesting....

Nice link, thanks for posting...there are 12 "behind the scene" stories at this link!

Levon Helm...priceless:

What's your top memory?

It was storming and raining. The stage was five stories. People looked the size of fingertips and you couldn't hear yourself. I didn't feel like we had much connection with the audience. But the crowd was something to see.

Did it change you? How?

Well, I didn't have to go into therapy, or anything.

Thanks for the link. No mention of Alan "the Blind Owl" Wilson - that pisses me off! His voice is even heard on the opening music of Woodstock, for God's sake!

Went to Mike Lang's book signing at Barnes & Noble in NYC last nite. Interesting presentation and he definitely is an interesting guy, w/ lots of insight on the entire Woodstock festival.

Among the things he confirmed to me was that Richie Havens did NOT play for three hours. There was a legend that Richie Havens played and played and played but it's not true. Mike said that he probably played for an hour which can seem like three when you're on stage and time plays many tricks on you.

Levon was one who was interviewed in that Sunday Dateline show and I really liked the way he described his initial reaction at looking out at the crowd ... believe he said there were a lot of them and they were very 'jubilant'.) (loved that he referred to them as jubilant ... jubilant indeed )

I just got off the phone with a buddy in PGH that I have not seen in 10 years... he was headed to Woodstock for the reunion, he and his older brother hitch hiked to the original when he was 13. He said he remembered the announcement about the brown acid... his comment

"TOO LATE"

My first date with my first love was to the movie the following May... we saw it again (together) last december.... after being apart for 27 of the last 40 years

Same here Wharfy. I was 10 at the time. My dad was in the Air Force and we were stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi. No chance of hitchhiking there for me.

Besides we were kind of busy dealing with Hurricane Camille, which hit us during the festival on the 18th , and tuned out to be a major historical footnote in its own right.

I'm looking at an issue of Smithsonian magazine right now with a story about that couple at Woodstock.

Here is an interesting little quote...

quote:
After the 1st shock of recognition, the couple gave little thought to the photograph for nearly two decades, until Life (magazine) tracked down Bobbi for a 20th anniversary article in 1989. "After hearing our story" she says today, "I think some people are disappointed that we were not..."

". . . . Full fledged hippies" Nick says.

"That we were not out and out flower power and revolution. I was just a country girl. He was just a two-job college student." Married for 38 years with two grown sons, they now live in Pine Bush, 45 minutes southeast of Bethel. Bobbi is an elemetary school nurse; Nick, a retired carrenter, is a building inspector in Orange County.
