We are all going to an attorney to discuss her will and final wishes. We had already taken care of her burial and even included flowers in the deal. Mom is so glad to be getting all this done ahead of time so that when the death squad is sent out or she gets put down like a sick dog, the rest of our family wont have to fret.

*We actually are meeting with an attorney to draw up her will. Maybe Maconga or JPB or one of the other birthers can let Limbaugh know that creating a will is also part of the death squad and euthanasia pact with the health care industry. Might be a fun rumor to get going....

I'm not going to go to any lawyer to draw up a will. Then the government will know what I've got and how to find me so they can kill me and find a way to keep my assets. Thanks for the warning....I was so close to making a mistake.

ST, recommend you ask about having a living will and/or Durable Power of Atty for Healthcare drafted also. They are usually state statutory forms that can be done at nominal cost.

Gosh, how do I sleep at night? I've drafted hundreds of such documents that contemplate early death!

I don't see anything wrong with announcing that you're making arrangements and pre-planning funerals. Around here my folks had everything in order when my dad passed and we've got everything prepared for when Mom passes. No one wants to have to stand in a funeral home and pick out caskets right after losing a loved one if they don't have to. We also have advanced directives in place. That doesn't mean we're going to pull any plugs. Just that Mom's wishes are made clear when the time comes.

They'll find you anyway, dead people still owe taxes, there's no escaping the govt. Even the people you leave money to owe money (inheritance taxes). Have to do a Lucious Clay and put in mason jars and bury it in the ground!

In two words mass transit. In four words cross surveillance (travel in more than one direction) mass transit!

A pre-need account is also a nice tax shelter, last I heard it paid 9% interest. You can also take out loans on what is in that account and use it like a 401K plan.

In 2009, estates under $3.5 million are exempt from federal estate tax. Next yr looks like it will drop to $1MM.

Groovin'! Hey - did you let your mother know you shared this on a message board, and that trying to look good on said message board is at least as important as her life?

Way to go, dude!

LOL... just another issue you know nothing about. As for 'looking good', I have nothing to fear. I dont sit here and lie and perpetuate outlandish rumors for political gain like some folks.

Damn straight. This is a rational course of action and very wise to boot. Its no wonder Maconga sees something wrong with it. It doesnt involve tin foil, UFO's or Kenyan birth certificates.

I think we all agree we need some reform, but if you are so happy with the legislation in its current form, can you please tell me how we should pay for it? We can sit here and make snide comments about what is in it, but we still have to pay for it. Who will pay for it, and how? Still haven't heard anyone mention that little detail. This legislation is allegedly cost saving. When Medicaid was passed it was projected that it would cost $12 billion by 1990. It came to over $110 billion that year. They missed by a factor of...oh 10! Medicare for the year thus far was about $314 billion and growing..by about 10% a year.

Well, considering that since those arrangements were made she's had several strokes, no, I don't tell her about everything I do or write. However she was in posession of her full facalties when the arrangements were made and knows all about them. Kind of hard to prepare an advance directive without the person's knowledge. And she spent several hours telling me what kind of funeral she wants. If I did tell her I posted this information, I dare say she would think it a good idea to alert everyone as to how iimportant these end of life arrangements are.

My Mom, who stays on top of current issues quite closely and has told me on many occasions the anger she feels at the lying going on in the healthcare debate, would find this thread absolutely hilarious. Actually, I think I'll show it to her.

not sure what i think about the title of this thread.

i think it's very wise to draft up legal documents so that your wishes are carried out.

i also think that if someone wants to die, then they should be able to die. if there is no victim, then there is no crime.

No. She finds the "death squad euthanasia" crap the most horrible thing she's ever heard. She and my Dad are AARP members, believe me, they've heard it all in fine detail over the last few weeks. She's also a three-time cancer survivor who has had to fight her private insurer tooth-and-nail for the coverage they should be contractually providing for nearly every single treatment and surgery. Tell her there's nothing wrong with the current system and she'll laugh in your face.
