Aerosmith's Steven Tyler falls from stage in SD

Vocalist Steven Tyler of the rock band Aerosmith performs at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre By CARSON WALKER, Associated Press Writer Carson Walker, Associated Press Writer 9 mins ago
RAPID CITY, S.D. Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler was airlifted to a hospital after falling from stage during a concert at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in western South Dakota.

Tyler, 61, fell while entertaining the crowd by dancing around after the sound system failed during the song "Love In an Elevator," said Mike Sanborn, spokesman for the Buffalo Chip Campground, which hosted the outdoor concert.

Tyler was on the stage's catwalk when he fell backward onto a couple of fans in the middle of what was a record crowd, Sanborn said. Security rushed to help him and the crowd cheered when Tyler got back up.

"He was good natured about it," Sanborn said. "He was in good spirits when he got in the helicopter. He was talking and joking with the physician."

"It was an unfortunate end to an extraordinary evening."

Tyler suffered minor head and neck injuries and a shoulder injury, but it wasn't immediately clear how serious that was, he said.

Tyler was taken backstage and around 12:15 a.m., Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry came out to tell the audience Tyler was being taken to the hospital and that the show would not go on.

It happened about halfway through the performance, Sanborn said.

"He does a lot of dancing on the stage and he does a lot of stuff with his mike stand. He put his stand down and twirled around and stepped backwards off the stage," he said.

Sanborn said Tyler was attended to on site by a physician and flown to Rapid City Regional Hospital, the only major hospital in the region.

Jennifer Horton, the hospital's vice president of public relations and marketing, said early Thursday that Tyler wasn't in the hospital directory. Under the privacy laws, that means the person is either not there or chose not to be included in the directory, according to the hospital's Web site.

Tyler attended Sturgis last year to promote his Dirico Motorcycles line and was back this year to do that again and play at the Buffalo Chip.

Fans were disappointed the concert was cut short but hoped Tyler was OK.

Lance Yellow Robe, who said he was 8 eight feet from the stage when Tyler fell off, told the Rapid City Journal "you could kind of see it coming because he was dancing all over the stage.

"I hope he's OK," Yellow Robe said. "I could care less about the concert being canceled."

I have seen him fall off stage before, almost hang himself on cables, lie down from excess and generally stumble everywhere. All during his times of substance abuse.

After all the talk of sobriety, the last show I saw he seemed far from sober to me. There have been a few delays and set backs over the last couple of years. I hope that they were not all just cover-ups while trying to get him straight again. Those are the rumors.

They were just getting back on stage. Hope this doesn't set them back again. I also hope that Steven is staying straight. Tough battle but worth it.

Supposed to see them and ZZ in September. Should be interesting for me backstage. The Aerosmith guys treated me well in the past and Billy Gibbons did not. I think Billy has been wearing that Chia pet on his head for too long. It has taken root.

THere's another thread about rock n roll retirement (Brian Johnson of ACDC). Steve's another candidate. He definitely looks like death in the above photo.

I met Tyler in the mid '70s just as they were breaking. What an a**hole. I met him again a few years back and he could not have been nicer. It's my understanding they're off the sauce and the hard-stuff but still like a good toke. Supposedly a guy I knew here in the Midwest was one of their favorite connections in that regard until he was killed in a motorcycle crash a few years ago. The band hasn't been back since.

Great to hear that the superstar seems to be okay. But what about the two common fans that he fell on?

Glad it didn't end worse.

Is there some irony that he fell while singing "Love In An Elevator" which includes the lyric, "love in an elevator, lovin' it up 'til I hit the ground"...

I'm just sayin'....

How old is Tyler nowadays? Thank god, Gregg Allman is more from a "blues singer" tradition as they, like a fine wine, get better with age, and do so with a certain degree of dignity. But "rock stars", especially "lead singers" who prance around stage, and so on and so forth, are not quite that fortunate. It's only a matter of time, before some band like Aerosmith has their tour sponsered by Depends or AARP.

"Hope I die before I get old" was probably good advice. There DOES come a time and place for one to "hang up their rock 'n roll shoes", are at very least, and have a little dignity when "rocking out". Singing the songs is cool (especially if the voice isn't to shot) but dancing/prancing around like you're some twentysomething "stud" really doesn't cut it after a certain age. Basically, sixty ain't the new twenties, no matter how much Viagria that you've taken.

Tyler is 61, give or take a decade.

Agree re: Gregg, but he also benefits from the long instrumentals and sharing some of the singing with Warren. Saw McCartney a few weeks ago - strong, but voice slipping. Jagger and the Stones 2 years ago (incredibly weaker than the tour 6 years ago), saw the Who twice on their last tour - first time (3rd show of the tour) Daltrey sounded great; a few months later his voice was shot (and Pete was on fire unlike the first show) As one ages the fingers and hands may move slower, but the tone remains the same. The human voice is not as durable. And, as mentioned previously blues singers get a break. Alberta Hunter was almost 90 when she sang at the Cookery in the early 80's and she still could bring it for an hour

A lot of people I talked to thought Tyler was drinking at the Atlanta show.

I don't know, you could not pay me to go see them.

Guess he didn't fall far and/or hard enough to do him in. Oh well... we can only wish!

Maybe he'll hang it up after this and just chill. I've never been a Steve Tyler fan. I find him very obnoxious and annoying.

I took my son to the show and Atlanta and Tyler sure acted like he had a head full of something. He cut the show short, his vocals sucked and Joe Perry had a guitar hero battle with an animated figure on screen. It was a joke on many levels!
