I effed up my thumb on my left hand yesterday. I was fixing my concrete walkway where it cracked and sunk, and created a tripping hazard. I was mixing a bag of quick-crete in a five gallon bucked with a hand drill with a mixing paddle. I've done this a thousand times. The glove that I was wearing got caught in the drill and the trigger stuck, it wrapped my thumb around, dislocating it, and breaking the tendon & knuckle. I can't believe it. That drill has a lot of torque. It felt like it would rip the skin off. My hand looks like an aliens hand, the thumb just isn't in the right place. LOL I can't move it at all.

Don't you hate it when that happens? LOL

Hopefully I can get in to see a specialist tomorrow. Or at least make an appointment. The last time I broke a finger it was ten days before he could see me. Too late to do anything but splint it and wait. (I'm my own worse enemy)

I'm bummed. I hooked up with some local musicians who posted ads on Craigslist.
We formed a band, and did an open mike last week. We weren't that tight but we were improving. That's over now. I told them to look for a new guitar player. @#$%!

I'm hoping I regain full mobility some day. I think I will.
Wish me luck.

This sucks.

Life lessons are learned the hardest way. I worked in a production facility where we manufactured neon signs and had a guy lose his pinky and ring finger in a 2 hp drill press when his cotton glove got hung in the 1 1/4' paddle bit. Worst part was he had been written up 2 weeks before for wearing gloves on the drilling station. Your lucky to have only dislocated, If you hadn't been able to let go of the trigger.

@Yurtle . . .

You know, now that you mention it, I seem to remember a safety bulletin where I used to work about that very same issue. Wish I would have remembered that yesterday.

Never had a broken bone but my cousin managed to break both of her wrists twice as a child. First time was falling off a jungle gym, can't remember how she managed it the second time.

Yikes, punknseed!!! My thumb aches just reading this! Hope your hand heals quickly and completely. This accident could have had a much worse ending ... thankfully it didn't.

Anyone ever break a digit?

Broken Both thumbs different times. First the left hand, playing touch football
reached to tag my brother and his heel of his spikes hit my metacarpal in the thumb
breaking and dislocation at the same moment. my thumb was pointing at my elbow.

The surgeon saw it and said "I don't think I can fix it". I said would you please try?
He set it and it didn't set quiet straight. I was planning to go back and have it
re-broken and get some pins set in, but it has been functional enough that I never
bothered with the surgery.

the right thumb broke during a pickup game when it was hit by a rocket 2 handed chest pass
striking the tip of the thumb and jamming it back into the 2nd joint cracking and dislocating it.
I was able to pull it back into the joint and I taped it up and kept playing because my team
was in the semifinals of the men's city league.... I did most my scoring off rebounds at the rim so it didn't hurt my game much to not have a good right thumb. We lost in the finals.

Both still hurt from time to time.

The first time I almost didn't pass Quantitative Analysis because of the percodan they gave me.
I was tripping in class and not doing well. My adviser was teaching the class and suggested
I switched to a non narcotic pain killer until after exams. I did and squeaked out a C.
the pain was awful in the morning and that first rush from the pills hit me right at class time.
I was fine later and my afternoon classes didn't suffer. still managed a BS cum laude .

GO BOBCATS!

This in embarrassing but back when I was in art school I was building a sculpture that required that I drill a bunch of holes. I was using a big 1/2 HP drill. I also had very long hair. Yep, the hair got sucked into the drill and it wound its way on up until the drill smashed into my forehead and I let go of the trigger. The drill unwound back down my hair but I was dazed and hit the trigger again. It hit me in the head again before I realized what was going on and let go very dazed and confused.

Owie! Hope it's not too serious! I've had my big toe smooshed twice by horses, inconvenient as all get out, but I bet a thumb is way worse. Heal quickly!

It pretty much was a Three Stooges thing. You should have seen my hair afterwards! To add to the embarrassment the whole class got a safety lecture afterwards and I had to sit through it. Fortunately only my pride was hurt, unlike Punknhead's thumb. The fact that he plays an instrument makes it even worse. Hope it heals quickly and completely guy!

LMAO!!! So it wasn't just me with the visual images... (And glad that you didn't get hurt with that one, cybergaloot ... well, maybe except for you pride. ) PS - I too have long hair and believe me - you have done a public service in sharing your story ... I know I'll be remembering it next time I turn the drill on.

I worked for years as a mechanic after graduating college unemployable with a degree in art. There were several dumb accidents like the time I got mad and hit the tire of a car on the list with a hammer. They bounce back when you do that! Not recommended! And the time I ran over my hair with the creeper and got it tangled up in the caster. I had to grab the sides of the creeper and kind of hop my way back out from under the car so I could stand up and untangle it.

My band is bummed. There are plenty of guitar players as good or better than me, but not many that want to play
with old farts like us.
I picked up the guitar this morning and played it a little. It was painful even with the painkillers. But I am determined to get back into it.

@Spacemonkey . . . John, I'm doing the same thing. (not gonna play football, but) I got a splint, and taped it up, and I'm gonna use it just like it wasn't broken. . . er . . . carefully

You're right Deb, could have been much worse. It's starting to feel a bit better.

THX guys.

I broke my collar bone on the right side when another 250 moto x'r landed on top of me. As that healed I stepped over a cable about knee high, fell, and broke the left collar bone. Go figure. Another time, I was doing a hand stand on a longboard down a hill in Orange County and ran into the trunk of a brand new 77' Ford LTD. My arm got caught between the space were the bumber wrapped around to the rear fender and snapped it at the elbow. I wore a cast that braced my arm in an upward "hello" position and got clowned at school with constant "How" in indian accent and the classic "right turn Clyde".

The bone may heal by itself but tendons, and cartilage usually require surgery to fix them, the physical therapy will probably be worse than the surgery so don't wait too long to get evaluated by a HAND surgeon orthopedist.
