I loved the Grateful Dead with Brent, maybe because that is when I got turned on to the Dead and he wrote some good songs and sang and played well! RIP Brent

I remember turning on the local tv news and suddenly it appeared.... in the corner of the screen a picture of Brent Mydland and his name in writing. The only thing I knew it could be is that he died. What else would have happened to bring Brent Mydland onto the news with his image??

Just from listening to tapes from around the time he joined the band it seems he rejuvenated them. Any way I really liked his work with the band

Actually, his first debut concert at Spartan Stadium, San Jose 4/22/79 is my favorite Dead tape of all time!!! The rejuvination that you talk about is definitely there. From the beginning, he added excellent organ and electric piano flourishes to the music. Although he had a synthesizer onstage too, he apparently rarely used it, exept for "space."

We had gone to see the Grateful Dead on July 14, 1990 at Foxboro Stadium
and only days later got the dreadful news about Brent. We were shocked. He
played so well at the Foxboro show there was no way of knowing what was ahead.
All of the Dead shows I've seen have been with Brent except one in 1991 with
Bruce Hornsby and Vince Welnick. In some ways the band was never the same.

I was working 3rd shift, walked into the Datacenter & as usual the music was blasting. It was "Blow Away" and I remember thinking that was cool, the Dead didn't get much airplay except for the obvious tunes. Then I heard the news

This Barlow/Mydland tune is one of the most powerfully emotional songs I have ever heard.. It touched me emotionally before I got married. Now that I have a daughter, it makes me tear up and even cry every time I hear it...

Little girl lost
In a forest of dreams.
It's a dark old wood
And it's damp with dew.
Hoot owl hoots
For a moment it seems
Something big and cold
Just got ahold of you.
Just when everything gets scary,
Daddy's come 'round for his darlin' again.
Hold my hand with your little fingers.
Daddy's loving arms gonna gather you in.
Ain't no way the Bogeyman can get you,
You can close your eyes, the world is gonna let you,
Your daddy's here and never will forget you,
I will take you home.
I will take you home.
Gonna carry you back home
In my arms.
I will take you home.

Long is the road
We must travel on down.
Short are the legs
That will struggle behind.
I wish I knew for sure
Just where we're bound,
What we will be doin'
And what we're gonna find.
Wherever we go, there will be birds to cheer you
Flower to color in the fields around.
Wherever we go, I'll be right here near you
You can't get lost when you're always found.

Ain't no fog that's thick enough to hide you
Your daddy's gonna be right here beside you
If your fears should start to get inside you
I will take you home.
I will take you home.
Gonna carry you back home
In my arms.
I will take you home.

Love that picture of Brent with his daughter, Yerry. And loved Brent with the GD ... I think that his vocals and keyboard really added a lot to their songs. Hope you are resting peacefully up there with Jerry, Brent - maybe getting some jams going.
