Get Off The Phone And Drive
Each and every day I find it most unnerving
Totally annoying and utterly disturbing
This thing that really irks me, this thing I don’t condone
Is driving in your car while talking on the phone
Are you so darn important that you can’t be expected
To even for one minute not to be connected
But here is my advice for keeping you alive
When you’re in the car, get off the phone and drive.

Me, too, Otie. If I get a text while I'm driving, I try to read and respond when I get to a stop light. If it changes to green before I'm through....oh well. If it's urgent, I'll pull into a parking lot or somewhere safe off the road and take care of it. ____________________

Some of my peeves:
1) the Sunday paper that is sold on Saturday
2) When I can't get my server to bring the bill after I'm done
eating. No, don't take the plates, take my money so I can go. |

BDOB, you ride your bike a lot. How many times has one of these morons changed lanes or whatever and not known you are there because they are too wrapped up in their conversation or whatever? I see it all the time when I am on my bike. ____________________

Agree. Especially in rush hour traffic. Everytime I see someone straddling lanes on the freeway or driving 35 MPH in 65 MPH traffic it seems they've got a cellphone to their ear and are off in lala land. Drives me nuts. Ditto for the texting while driving - imo that one's worse because it frequently requires 2 hands - what are they driving that car with??? ____________________ "Come on down to the Mermaid Cafe and I will buy you a bottle of wine, and we'll laugh and toast to nothing and smash our empty glasses down..." |

I went to a seminar about a year ago, and one of the speakers there was a personal injury attorney who had gotten some huge awards from drivers and their employers when wrecks occurred during a cell call. She said there were studies that indicated a driver's attention remained impaired for about two minutes after hanging up. She admitted she did not understand it herself, but the study somehow showed it. Her point was that even hands-free still distracts drivers.
So if people don't care about their own safety, know that there are attys out there licking their chops for drivers that chat while driving. On the other hand, if you're in a wreck, insist that your atty subpoena the other driver's cell records.

People just don't see bikes. They just don't. I used to ride quite a bit (Sportster) and I was always shocked by it. Or, you have these crotch rocket morons that swerve in and out of expressway traffic doing absolute stupid things that could hurt or kill people and it gives the safe riders a really bad name. ____________________ "Live every week like it's Shark Week." - Tracy Jordan |

I agree with the cell phone talking & texting crap.
My pet peeve is people who have a job, housing, etc. saying "I'm starving", uhh, excuse me, you might be really hungry, even famished, but as long as you have money, YOU'RE NOT STARVING!!! ____________________

For years I have had a theory that turn signals are purposely disabled on at least 75% of the cars sold here in Maine...and on the other 25% they only work AFTER the turn has already been initiated. ____________________ I pledge and support the elimination of the derogatory use of the r-word from everyday speech and promote the acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities. http://www.r-word.org/ |

I'll admit to being distracted on my cell. Hands free makes NO difference, it's the act of conversating, not holding the phone. That said, it's equally distracting to talk to a passenger, so unless we ban speech in cars altogether... ____________________ Walk down on the street and leave, my blues at home |

We were taught that a person on a cell phone has the same attention focus as a person with a .08 BAC. Legally drunk. I get exceptionally angry at people on cell phones not paying attention or driving too slow etc. Hell, the last accident I got into was because the woman was on the damn phone and just pulled out in front of me. Ive even thought about building a cell phone jammer that would kill the signal for about 100 ft in any direction, but theres a lot of downsides to that..emergencies, police, fire etc. Ill just stick with passing them and flipping them off. ____________________ Missing- 245 spines. I just got back from a vacation where I drove a total of 2600 miles, most on interstates.
Without exception, the majority of vehicles I came up on, going WAY too slow in the passing lane, causing people to have to pass them on the right...had drivers talking on a cell phone, oblivious to the fact that they were causing all this havoc.
On the other hand, I just saw a story where they have the technology, via GPS in cell phones, to determine if you are in a moving vehicle and disable the phone, except for emergency calls.....now that is going too far. ____________________ You want to talk to me

I wonder if it would be better to require phone numbers on the outside of the car so you can call the guy and tell him to speed up. ____________________ Missing- 245 spines. If found, please send one to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave and the rest to the Capitol building care of the Democratic Party. |

Maybe some technology could be used to disable the phone if you are moving more than 20mph, but then again, how would it know if you were the driver or passenger? Gotta be a solution other than outlawing them (which doesnt work...impossible to enforce really). We have some areas here in town where cell phones are not allowed (school zones). You have to be hands free. Again, difficult to enforce. ____________________ Missing- 245 spines. Just saw a story how in 2003, NHTSA hid findings of its study showing cell use impairment.
http://blogs.consumerreports.org/cars/2009/07/nhtsa-ny-times-cell-phone-dri
ving-dangers-study.html
ST, I appreciate how a law would be difficult to enforce, but I thnk many would voluntarily comply. DUI is difficult to enforce too, but it can be discerned by driver behavior, which happens to be very similar to cell-impaired drivers. Illlegaize it! |

Im all for making it illegal. I want to see citations for "inattentive driving" but the judges wont allow it. ____________________ Missing- 245 spines. If found, please send one to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave and the rest to the Capitol building care of the Democratic Party. |

Then you have the vehicle that has four people in it looking for an address on a building
AND the driver is on a cell phone, holding up traffic.......
Then you have a vehicle with a NASCAR sticker of sort on it, holding up traffic.....
On interstate hwy somewhere and you have someone in the right (hand) doing 5 mph below the speed limit and someone in the left lane passing them doing the speed limit....
holding up traffic....... ____________________ I BLAME SANG

Tell me about it.
I was hit (me on foot) in a cross walk in the Silver Spring Town Center pedestrian zone by
a woman looking in her purse for her phone in Jan 2002
permanent damage to my left rotater cuff , fractured wrist, left leg bruised to the bone.
She got 180 days of probation for nearly killing me. and the fine was suspended because
she claimed poverty. They didn't even suspend her license. The first time I talked to
the assistant DA was at the trial.
If I hadn't stuck my wrist in the pavement it would have been my head fractured instead.
The fireman couldn't believe I didn't hit my head given the distance I was thrown.
I give the credit to my gymnastics and diving coaches .
The insurance settlement didn't even cover my rehab at her policy limits.
I had to rehab my left leg, my right wrist and left shoulder. The rotator cuff
never came back. I had to give up swimming (my daily cardioid exercise) because
of the injury.
There should be much tougher penalties for folks not paying attention at the wheel.
IF she had been on drugs or alcohol, she would have probably done jail time.
She got a slap on the wrist, I got the pain.

she didn't even realize she hit me. someone had to yell at her to stop.
at trial she said she didn't see me? (no fooling, you were looking in your purse
for the cell charger
I am 6-3 , 240lb, How can you not see me?
then she backs up, I am thinking "is this is death race 2000 and she's coming in for the kill?"
then she comes over and tries to lift me off the pavement, I can't stand
because of the swelling in the leg she hit. she's pulling on my fractured wrist
then she's crying "get up, don't die"
"don't die on me mister"
First Monkey County Officer on the scene: "What do you need?"
me: "get this crazy woman away from me"

Another time I was driving to work in Georgetown on a Monday and this dude behind me was reading the Sunday comics. I recognized the calvin and hobbes strip.
I knew it was just a matter of time and he hit my rear bumper (at 5mph).
he said "I am sorry I don't how it happened"
Me: "You were reading the comics". (with a friendly grin)
he had the gall to deny it. I made him give me 20 bucks for some rubbing compound and touch up paint.
what a moron. He thinks because he isn't paying attention no one else is? ____________________ Keep on Smiling
