ODR inspired me...

I've mentioned this before but no one else seems to recall....does anyone emember the episode of "Whats Happening" in the '7s where Rerun gets blackmailed or something into bootlegging a Doobie Brothers concert? And he dropped the tape recorder inthe middle of the show and the doobie brothers gave some big speech about how recording live music was wrong?

i swear, i have to deal with the explanation to friends and family more then i care to admit that "Yes, taping is alllowed, in fact ENCOURAGED but the bands i have cd from"

I was a "Whats Happening" watcher and I do remember something about the Doobies..because it seemed out of place on that show.

But I have dealt with the same thing.....I was telling the post office dude about why I bring so many packages...and he was like thats illegal. And I told him...no..that a lot of bands allow it.

The I brought him a Ray Charles show and he was happy..LOL !

I never saw an episode of What's Happening.
I just remember watching Different Strokes with Gary Coleman as a kid.

In the episode, the little girl (Roger's sister) told Doobie bassist Tyrone Porter to "play something with some bass". They played "Echoes of Love" from "Living on the Fault Line".

Oh man, we talk about about that episode ALL of the time. That's so great. I love when Rerun is dancing, it be during "Taking it to the Streets" and the tape recorder falls out of jacket and the whole concert just stops!!! hee hee. That is classic t.v. I love it, in the end they go to bring the tape to the bootleggers, but they secretly have the Doobies with them and they bust 'em right there... It's so funny. I laugh everytime I just think about it...

i'm glad i wasnt having a vu-ja dey incident...the feeling that i was never there before....

here was the synopsis of that episode:

37. Doobie or Not Doobie (1)

The Doobie Brothers are set to put on a concert at the guys' high school and they leave Rerun to get the tickets. However, by the time Rerun gets to the ticket booth, they're sold out. Later, two shady characters offer Rerun free tickets if he just tape records the concert. It is only later that Rerun learns that they are bootleggers and they threaten Rerun, Raj and Dwayne if they don't comply.

Oops, I meant to say it "could" be during "Takin' it to the Streets". - Man, I am surprised more people don't remember that... Dee (Roger's sister), or maybe it is rerun asks the bass player ("What are you, a half-brother") or something like that, (he is the only black guy in the band).

don't they give they a tape with the sounds of Rerun eating popcorn or something?

why did the doobies take such a rigid stance on taping their shows? seems to me that they might be a little more popular these days if they had some shows cirulating.

Yes Linnie. After they bust the bootlegers, they play the tape and it's just the sound of Rerun chewing!!! Hee hee...

Funny. Yes, maybe they'd be doing better if the allowed the taping... Although I think the whole point of the show was that these guys were going to make lousy sounding tapes and sell them to the public for profit, so I think that was the objection that the Doob's had! hee hee... I really can't stop thinking of how silly that whole episode is. Sometimes things like that are just so fun to think about because you remember being a kid a seeing it for the first time.

hey paulie, i never thought of it like that.

i guess when people question our hobby i'll just tell them that it is illegal to buy or sell these recordings but you can trade them as long as there is no profit.

can't wait to see the looks on their faces then!
