Am very sad to hear about Frank McCourt's passing from cancer yesterday. He first stole my heart with his words in Angela's Ashes and then with 'Tis and Teacher Man and the introduction to his brother, Malachy, in his own books led me to Malachy's writings (A Monk Swimming, Singing My Him Song). That these strong characters were able to survive the lives dealt them and flourish and share their stories with the world is amazing, indeed. I always admired Frank's devotion to and passion for teaching ... what an honor it must have been to be a student of this man who so loved words and a good story and who was equally devoted to teaching. I've always thought how fun it would be to sit in the White Horse Tavern and hoist one with a group blessed to be hear one of these stories directly from the horses mouth. Rest peacefully, Frank.

Aye, this was sad indeed - Frank was not all that old. Trust me though, if he had not got out from under the environment he grew up in, he would not have lived as long as he did.

My daughter Shannon reads to her boyfriend all the time - Saturday night she is walking out of the house with a book - and I asked her what one she was reading him now....and she said Angela's Ashes. Shannon read it years ago when it came out (of course I bought it)...just thought that whole timing thing was a bit weird.

Yes a fine teacher - RIP Frank McCourt

Brilliant! Thanks for sharing that...I was down the beach tonight and played Going Home (Holding Hands With God) on me bagpipes for all those who have passed just recently - was at a wake for a co-worker this afternoon. May their spirit be free and joined with their loved ones who have gone before them...
