A true American legend. He had one of the most trusting voices ever. He will be missed.

Wow. Both legend and icon fit the man perfectly.

It's sort of fitting that Walter leaves this world during the same week that we are celebrating the 40th anniversity of the first landing on the moon.

Walter Cronkite was a huge fan of the space program and one of it's biggest proponents. He listed more than a few of the 1st generation of astronauts as personal friends. They knew that he was a true kindred spirit.

Whenever I watched the live coverage of any of the Gemini or Apollo missions as a kid, I insisted that it it had to be CBS and Uncle Walter. Fortunately my dad agreed with me.

RIP Walter Cronkite

and godspeed on your journey...

Walter was so much more important than that MJ person.

He was miles above any fox news bobble-head, and many other "real" newscasters.

Indeed he did. And God bless him.

One of the most memorable and touching moments in television history (besides the moon landing) was when Walter Cronkite had to tell us (and the world) that John F. Kennedy had just died.

Seeing this master news broadcaster on the verge of tears putting on and removing his glasses several times, struggling to keep his composure as he read the news copy is gut wrenching to watch and his barely concealed grief perfectly mirrored what a horrified nation was feeling at that same moment.

He was the real deal. A True Class Act.

So long, friend.

And that's the way it is...

LPS - this is always my first thought when thinking of Walter Cronkite ... the removal of the glasses, the choked voice from this man who was always so composed and really the voice that brought the world to much of this nation. I will never forget that moment or this fine man. Rest peacefully, Walter.

RIP

we lost a great one
when I was a kid, CBS was the only news network that we watched.
Walter defined the news.

on the lighter side, he was a friend of Mickey Hart's and saw at least one GD show at MSG in the 90s.

Our broadcasting giants are leaving us, one right after another....

It's hard to fuss about a life so long and spent in such caring service to others, but WC was journalism personified. He cared about the truth, and not merely sensationalism.

A treasured man...and journalist...the likes of which we'll never see again.

God speed Mr. Cronkite. Thank you for the memories.

RIP Mr. Cronkite, you gave class and credibility to the news business, something it severely lacks today.I'm sure The Man upstairs has some great assignments waiting for you.

CNN interviewed a former producer of his at CBS.

She said Mickey Hart was a personal friend of Walters, and that Mickey gave him a complete drum set and taught him to play at 92.

How cool is that?

Very cool indeed.

As if I did not already totally respect Mr. Walter Cronkite...

When your name is synonomous with respected, it's a life well-lived. I too can't help noting the irony of his passing during Apollo's anniversary, as his enthusiasm for the space program was obvious. Still, I'd prefer to think of him now as an avid sailor; fair winds Mr. Cronkite.
