O.k. wasnt sure what topic to post this under....and i think i've seen this discussed elsewhere but i just have to know:

I'm listening to 10-23-70 for the first time....it's blowing my mind. by far, the best "Dreams" i've heard. What (and who) is making that "Bird Noise"? Is that a guitar? is that Duane? holy cow. this is fantastic. i'm 75% sure it's Duanes Slide but want a confimation.

sorry for the stupid question but i just have to know.

and btw; i'll b*p this one disk show for anyone who wants it. PM me.

Hi Linnie,
I think it's Duane's guitar. But I will take you up on the 10/23/70 B+P, especially if it's a "mind blower" of a show! Let me try this again.....here goes.....
Thanks!

Yes, it is Duane, using the slide way up at the top for the effect. He did it on the end of Layla, but also on the Boz Scaggs lp back in May 69. I think he also did it earlier but cannot recall. He cites it as his bird (aka Bird Parker) signature on the New York radio interview of Dec 1970.

Cheers

Carlos "Alternate Layla also very nice" Rivera

Hey now Linnie -

I'm sure slidejules or some other techie player could enlighten you in more detail, but I remember seeing Duane make his birdcalls in person. It looked to me like he was using his slide on the very short strings below the bridge of the guitar. I also seem to recall that some of the Love Valley footage may show this ...

Yes Linnie, that is Duane. Just as Carlos explained.

Derek also makes bird sounds and a very cool other sound that I still can not describe. Like a whale call maybe? or dolphin?

i tell you, the past few months have been great for me.

Basically, i've fallen in love with this man since i started trading. can't get enough. in a way, i think i'm lucky to not have noticed how good he was till now...i'm like a kid in a candy store.

regarding the date, from the bootleg archive:

quote:
Allman Brothers Band - 10/23/1970 Printer Friendly
Bootleg Name: none
Venue: State Univerity of New York
Location: Stonybrook, NY
Source: Unknown
Conversion: Unknown

Setlist: Dont Keep Me Wonderin'
Stormy Monday
Liz Reed
You Dont Love Me
Dreams
Mountain Jam

ExtraInfo: Note: Although www.allmanbrothersband.com lists a concert on this date at SUNY Stonybrooky, this setlist is identical to the well-documented setlist from 7.26.70 SUNY Stonybrook, and users have confirmed that a seed circulating as 10.23.70 is in fact another copy of 7.26.70.

This note is wrong. I have talked to Rowland Archer about this confusion a couple of times (he's the main guy over at Hittin the Web). Anyway, this show's correct date IS 10/23/70, but they also played SUNY Stonybrook on 7/26/70 and 4/28/70 and many many times in the Duane era. This show is definitely not 7/26 because they play You Don't Love Me, a song debuted in October 1970. If it has YDLM, it's after 10/70, and cannot, therefore, be 7/26/70. What likely happened was somebody was making a copy many years ago and they mislabeled it because the venues are the same and most of the setlist is identical. To add further confusion, they also played early and late shows on both dates! But, 10/23/70 is the correct date.

Linnie

I got your pm and I want this one, please

I will double check the bird sound, but it was first done on a session, maybe even with Clarence "Patches" Carter......if you haven't heard the Boz Scaggs cd, great stuff on it, and just at the time the ABB was itself beginning its "concert" recordings

Cheers

No I don't need it but thanks. I asked because my show has 7 tracks on it. Where as the 7/26/70 show only had 6 tracks, I have 6 on that show but 7 tracks on the 10/23 70 I have.

You make the bird call by using the slide immediatley in front of the bridge pickup on the first and second strings (those are the two smallest strings for those of you who aren't players).

It's really not that hard to do-took me about 20 minutes to get it down good.

Hophead is correct on where Duane does the bird calls just below the bridge

Skip,
Hate to correct you,but it's impossible to do it behind the bridge pickup-the pickup won't amplify it.Already tried it.

Immediatley in front of the bridge pickup, almost touching it-you can see Duane do it on the Love Valley clip from Slidejules' page.

WCB, I stand corrected, to me not being a guitar player & seeing Duane only 4 times, just above, just below and around the bridge are all the same to me when recollecting it from 32 years ago. Thanks for the clarification

Skipper should know the answer to this but I have traded for 10-23-70 several times amd every time I get either a really good or a very poor version of 7-26-70 also at SUNY,

Are they really 2 separate shows? All info I have is that they did play SUNY again around 10/23 but I have not been able to find a legit recording of it. I may be wrong but if you check Phillybobs list and I think Clays as well they comment that their 10/23 is identical to 7/26. Forgve the typos got Jasmin Asleep in my lap as I try to post. I drove to St. Louis & back today and she gets the nap.. Go Figure.

A great sound that isn't easy to do. I have to kill the tone and the volume a little but to get it out of my guitar. Still a mezmerizing sound.

7/26/70 or 10/23/70: great show. My version has a Whipping Post on it but it is from an unknown source. The Dreams is awesome and so is the Liz Reed! Duanes solo in Liz Reed blows me away!

Hey,how 'bout an offer of this show? I'll B&P it for the first three to post here

peace, bumba

There really isnt a 10/23/70 circulating as far as I know. It is actually a mislabeled 7/26/70 show. I used to get/trade for it all the time hopin it would be a different show but NOPE, its 7/26/70 again.

Bumba,
Yup,if I don't back off the tone I get nasty squeels.

Note that this is played WAY higher than the solo on Layla, which is played at the top of the neck and extending to the highest E note on the first string, which is right over the rhythm/neck pickup on a Les Paul/SG.

I don't know.... but my supposed copy of 7/26/70 HAS You Don't Love Me. It's all right there, although shorter than the later versions. I can see a possibility of "this" show being 10/23/70.... but there is only ONE recorded show, not two.

**ExtraInfo: Note: Although www.allmanbrothersband.com lists a concert on this date at SUNY Stonybrooky, this setlist is identical to the well-documented setlist from 7.26.70 SUNY Stonybrook, and users have confirmed that a seed circulating as 10.23.70 is in fact another copy of 7.26.70.
