Tomorrow, July 9, marks the one year anniversary of the passing of a very special man who lived, loved, laughed and brought happiness to all who knew him. He was one of us, a true Allman Brothers Band fan, and just happened to have a really cool job that revolved around and brought him close to the band. For me, half the joy of going to shows was knowing I'd see Bill there. I miss his warm smile and embrace, but he left me an example of how to be kind to my fellow man, and I try to honor his memory by keeping his spirit with me whenever I am at a show. I'll never go to an ABB show and not think of him. I wish he was still here with us, but he IS with us in spirit. God bless the memory of this fine human being, known to us as....Brother Bill Ector, aka WillieHoward, from Mayberryetta, a suburb of Hot'lanta.

I miss Bill....still.

I will never forget the look of complete joy and happiness on his face while he was telling me about his sit-in with the Brothers at Wannee.

I miss Willie Howard every day. At every show I go to, I visit the HTN booth ... out of habit, as much as anything. If I saw his ghost, I'd certainly try to bear-hug it!

Bill brought a lot of us together. I remember several shows - hanging out at the booth and seeing Bill just beaming with pleasure and pride over all the friendships that he had forged.

There may be a better human being in this world, but I have yet to meet him.

If you spent 5 minutes with Bill, you felt like you had known him for years. One of the most accomplished and talented folks I have ever known - but he'd make you feel like the important one in a conversation.

Here's to Bill "Willie Howard" Ector! Thanks for sharing your gifts with us! Thanks for the memories and inspiration!

RB

Great tribute Dave. I'm sure Bill is looking down with pride at how you describe him. I wish I had the chance to meet this man who obviously meant so much to so many. With everything I have read about him I'm sure he was a very special human being.

A lesson in how to live.
Bill made others feel like they were the most important person in the world.
Took no account of wrongs done.
Only had positive things to say.
Tried to uplift, be a positive influence wherever life took him.

A role model. I'm nowhere near the kind of person he showed us how to be. But I have a pattern to aim for. This man blessed my life. Just by being himself. Goodness personified.

I miss him daily. So many things happen each and every day where I think, "I'll give Bill a call and see what he thinks about this." I'm thankful I had him in my life for so many years, and he touched the life of so many others here and everywhere. I see his smiling face every morning in a photo sitting on top of my Hammond organ as I walk through the music room on the way to the kitchen to get coffee.

Bill is certainly missed.

They way he made you feel like an old friend and special - something we could all strive for, but probably not pull off like Bill...it was his nature!

Back last year I bought one of those cool Bill Ector Tee shirts to support his children. Thing is, not ever meeting or knowing the man in person I feel like someone who did know him deserves to have the shirt. It is size xxl and has never been worn. I would really like this shirt to belong to someone who knew Bill personally and will wear it with pride. So I will ship this shirt to the first Bill Ector friend who wants it. Just PM me your address and I will send it to you. Thanks.

Being in the UK, I only had the pleasure of meeting Bill a half dozen times or so ... on my visits to NYC for the Beacon runs ... the second time I met him he hugged me like a long lost friend ... the third time he hugged me like a Brother ... he would write little messages on the envelopes that my HTN magazines were sent in ... that really made me feel special and narrowed that ocean between us to a little pond ... we may not have met very often ... but I am glad I got to know you and am proud to call you friend ... I miss you Bill ...

Great, very kind man. Last saw him on New Years at the Fox. Didn't know what he had going on the next couple days, and he was asking how I was doing. Amazing man.

Those who met him knew how much we are blessed to have known him.

If only for too short of a time.

Remembering Bill, who built something that mattered ...
quote:

What will be the measure of my days, weeks and years passed?
How will my life be valued?
What will matter is not what I bought, but what I have chosen to build.
Not what I received, but what I have shared and given you.
What will matter is not the level of my success, but my significance.
What will matter is not what I learned, but what I have taught.
What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage and sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to emulate from my example.
What will matter is not my competence, but my integrity and character; my true grit.
What will matter is not how many people I have known, rich or poor, but how many will feel a lasting loss when I am gone.
What will matter are not my faded memories, but the memories of those who knew and have loved me.
What will matter is how long I will be remembered, by whom, and for a kaleidoscope of reasons, like a brilliant rainbow.
Living a life that matters doesn't happen by accident.
It's not a matter of circumstance.
It is one made of choice; one of my own choosing.
And in so doing, I dance and write my name with Destiny.
I choose to live a life that matters.

I only talked on the phone with Bill, but he sure made you feel at ease. Turned out we had friends in common here but in life as well. he knew my good friend David Duncan.

I was proud to stick my head in a bucket of water ,to get the displaced volume, and then do a raffle at Red Rocks to raise money for his kids education.

I believe they are still taking donations, think the money raised from "Chopping Wood: Sept 5th,The Beating of a Life time will go to that good cause.

Bill you were a good man, and you are missed.

I never met Bill, my loss. Getting choked up reading these posts, the ultimate brother. I am sooo glad he got to get on stage and play with the Allman Bros. Such an honor for Bill and the ABB.
