Do you like them? Are you going to see any over the weekend? we try to hit a couple. 7/3 we will have a bbq and then go about a mile over to where there is a large display each year. We have another BBQ on the 4th, but I don't know if we'll see any that day.

I live on the 11th floor of my building with an almost 180 degree view of the tree line. So far in the last month I have been able to see 4 fireworks displays. Two were less than a mile away, the others were pretty far away. I just love sitting out on my balcony, sipping a cold one and watching fireworks.

I love fireworks!!! And they are illegal in my state but not in a bordering state about 2 hours away so I usually make a trip across the border to pick some up (not this year since I'm oncall and my 4th plans are tenuous). I like the big, sparkling sky displays the most. And I'm careful when setting them after being at a party a couple of decades ago where a friend blew half of his hand off with an M-80 (he was toasted and shouldn't been playing with fireworks but would not take 'no' for an answer).

My nephew has a big party at his place every year - volleyball, BBQ, music, beverages, etc ... and a perfect view from his backyard of the big display put on by the golf course within blocks of each of our homes.

Hope you and Phyllis and your friends have a great 4th, Jack!

I crossed the mighty St.Croix into Wisconsin with the kids last weekend. They have fireworks supermarkets! Taking my giddy kids in there was a trip down memory lane for me. Fireworks were illegal in IN and OH, but we drove to Fl once and when we hit TN my folks let us buy rockets and a brick of Black Cats. I felt like a king.
I told the kids pick out whatever makes you happy. We wound up with all kinds of rockets, mortars, roman candles and firecrackers.
I treated them to strawberry milkshakes for the ride home.
For one day, they were kings too.

Cool story, goldtopper ... you just made a memory for your kids to equal that one your parents gave you all those years ago. I always stop at those 'supermarkets' when I'm in Wisconsin, too Got me a young friend, the son of some long time friends, who expects me to be packing fireworks every time I visit them in their home on the Mississippi ... sometimes it's worth a few more miles driving time to get 'that grin' out of him when 'Aunt Deb' visits.

We always have the best one's here, cause it's New York. Grucci's did a world class event last weekend in Nassau County. The world class show at Jones beach this year is actually by a company called Garden State Fire Works, so it will be interesting to see what they do.

I've always loved 'em - whether watching or doing it myself (lighting, not making) ............

They are really up there in (high on the list of) 'beautiful things' to witness in life - along with the explosions; fantastic! (like NASCAR, lol)

However ......... My feelings have changed since I learned how freakin' toxic they are, the colorful ones - especially when set off over, say, the headwaters of a pristine river - or something like that - or ANYWHERE near humans and animals .....

... now understand that I've gone particularly fussy about this, since THAT (a pristine river) is one place they do it locally. In town, it could be different (maybe i'll try that out this year; just heard about a "viewing party" that could be interesting) ...

It's also one of those nights of the year where I much prefer to be home (safe) and keep it mellow, just listen to the gunfire and what-not ... see a few things in the sky.
.....................
oh yeah, sometimes forget the best kinda on-the-edge fun is right down the road a bit -- IN the road, at a lil' general store parking lot, local folks bring out their home-bought, home-made, etc. .... man, all kinds of crazy on-fire crap flyin' ... uh, somewhat randomly, haha ... oh! I haven't been there, but I think it may be just a little bit like Talladega - just a little, as nothing could quite match that.

Y'all enjoy Independence Day weekend, be safe, and rock on. Dig the fireworks!
Peace.

Slammer - you guys are invited to the BBQ/party on the 4th. It's a bring your own beverage/dish affair but I'm pretty sure if you show up with those that all coolers will be opened to you. (Yowza!)

up to when I was 7 years old my family lived in the Bronx and would get a tiny bungalow in Rockaway Beach, LI for the summer. Rockaway had weekly fireworks at the beach from a barge in the ocean. This is where I first loved seeing fireworks.

I got to see 3 sets in the last 2 days. 2 very big professional displays (both great) and an amatuer display that was quite large and long-the person who had the party has had one for 25 years and the fire truck comes and monitors things. It has been wet in the Denver area so everything was good to go!
