Has he produced anything lately? Just curious, I have not heard his name in awhile but that does not mean anything. He is good.

Hmmmm. Methinks Mutt Lange may disagree.

other than his solo stuff and ELO stuff i think tom pettys highway companion is the newest thing he produced.

for those not familiar with his work here are some of the albums he produced/co produced:
george harrison- cloud 9 and brainwashed
traveling wilburys- vol 1 and vol 3
paul mccartney- flaming pie
the beatles- "free as a bird" and "real love"
roy orbison- mystery girl
tom petty- full moon fever and into the great wide open

some excellent work over the years....& he was a Wilbury after all his production has a Beatle type aura--he clearly likes strings & other George Martin stuff--so imo he's a talented producer not the best...

There is some great stuff here, but hardly current. The last 25 years is a big statement...where is the rest of it?

What defines "best" for a producer? Album sales? Diverstiy of work? There's some big ones in the last 25 years, Mutt Lange, Flood, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Dr. Dre, Rick Rubin, Brian Eno...

2 george harrison albums
1 ringo starr album
1 paul mccartney album
3 tom petty albums
2 traveling wilburys albums
2 roy orbison albums
the 2 "new" beatles tunes
the concert for george harrison
1 solo album and is currently working on a new solo album
1 del shannon album
a few random songs on artists albums like randy newman

i guess there really is no way to call someone the best or any criteria. its just my opinion. i was basing it on the fact i feel every album he's produced is one of that artists best albums.

I think his production is over-board, and instead of letting the artist sound like themselves, he has to put that "ELO" stink on it. never dug ELO.

Well, he's worked with Regina Spektor this year. Allegedly he's working on another George Harrison album with Dhani Harrison...

Plus he did the concert for George. I know he's done some other non-Beatles/ELO related stuff, but probably not all that much.

I really really do like his work. BUT I think the best producers are the ones where you can't hear too much of their stamp on the music they're producing... They know how to bring out the best of the musicians they're working with.

Of course, though, there are 2 totally different situations a producer can find themselves in. One is to be there to help a band go in the direction that they want/need and make their creative thoughts become reality, and keep them on track. And then there is taking an artist and making it a commercial or viable product at whatever cost. (like someone who would produce Paris Hilton, or to a lesser degree a singer/songwriter who only strums guitar chords and sings lyrics melodies, but has NO idea how a band should approach their music)

I think Trevor Horn is an excellent producer. Not to say that I love everything he's done. I think that Tom Dowd was amazing producer.

I've never really thought of who I like the best though...

Jeff Lynne was lucky and walked into the Beatles connection. Without the connection to them and the Wilbury's than he really hasn't produced much.

I find his production a little stale for my tastes. But that may just be me.

Calling Jeff Lynne the best producer of the past 25 years is like calling Jim McMahon the best quarterback of the past 25 years. They were lucky to be where they were 23 years ago.

Jeff Lynne may have been behind some solid albums here and there, but I think Rick Rubin is hands down the most important producer of the past 25 years.

i see a few rick rubin albums listed, for sure danzig 4, that he didn't actual do anything for the album. glenn danzig said when they did the 4th danzig album rick was busy with cash and petty and his name is only listed because it was his record company

Rubin deserves a ton of credit for pushing Johnny Cash on the American Recordings Series and getting Johnny some much deserved attention and credit in his twilight years.
