Pitchman Billy Mays Found Dead
Posted Jun 28th 2009 11:50AM by TMZ Staff

TMZ has confirmed TV pitchman Billy Mays was found dead today in his home in Tampa, Florida early this morning.

According to the Tampa PD, the 50-year-old TV pitchman was found unresponsive by his wife Deborah at 7:45 AM.

TMZ has learned Mays' body has already been removed from his home.

Mays had just returned from Philadelphia, where he shot a new OxiClean commercial. He was a passenger aboard a plane that suffered a blown front tire upon landing. He told a local TV station, "All of a sudden as we hit you know it was just the hardest hit, all the things from the ceiling started dropping. It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head."

We're told Mays was at his home around 6:00 PM last night, and according to a source Mays was "acting fine and normal ... he was talking business with his father-in-law."

According to cops, there are no signs of forced entry to the residence and no foul play is suspected.

The Medical Examiner's office is expected to complete the autopsy by tomorrow afternoon.

Billy's wife Deborah just released the following statement: "Although Billy lived a public life, we don't anticipate making any public statements over the next couple of days. Our family asks that you respect our privacy during these difficult times."

Discovery Channel spokeswoman Elizabeth Hillman released a statement Sunday that reads, "Everyone that knows him was aware of his larger-than-life personality, generosity and warmth. Billy was a pioneer in his field and helped many people fulfill their dreams. He will be greatly missed as a loyal andcompassionate friend."

Story developing ...

According to the news he left NYC yesterday and when he landed in Tampa there was a hard landing due to the tires failing. There was shift in luggage and apparently hit Billy in the head. He was asked if he was ok and replied he had a hard head. Less than 24hrs later he was found dead

Sounds tragically similiar to what happened to Natasha Richardson.

The very first time that I saw Billy Mays in an Oxi-Clean commercial, for some reason, I thought that he was the person who invented it.

He certainly was enthusiastic about its cleaning abilities.

Imagine my surprise when I saw him hawking another (and yet another) new product.
Then I knew. He was just a pitchman. But he certainly was a recognizable pitchman.

RIP Billy Mays

Just saw him on, if I'm not mistaken, The Tonight Show, last week.

You're never guaranteed tomorrow.

RIP Billy.

I read that the airline is trying to say he wasn't wearing his seat belt so it's his fault he hit his head. If luggage was falling I can't see what difference a seat belt would have made. Sounds very much like the injury B.O. sustained only with a slower progress of the injury. Sad all the way around.

The autopsy should tell for sure. It could be similar to the head injury of B.O., or not. I didn't know of Billy Mays by name, but have seen his commercials. To be honest, they annoy me with his yelling voice. But I certainly wouldn't have wished anything bad on him. Another 50 year old passes away. I'm 50 also.

A bit off topic but I think it still applies. As we all know a head injury isn't something to ignore.

Reminded me of an incident that a buddy of mine's father had. He was working late at his company one night & started feeling ill. Called my friend to tell him he was sick and going home. The house was around a mile from the company, there's a hospital around a mile away too.

Something made him change his mind. He drove to the hospital. When his son arrived they were rushing him from the ER to the Operating room, just like something out of ER. Turns out he had an aortic aneurism (sp?). Happens at home he's gone.

Flipped a coin, came up roses. He's in his mid-seventies now, remarried w/ children.

I didn't read too much into his Twitter posts, but he said he was scheduled for a hip replacement surgery today. I wonder if there might have been something like a blood clot letting loose involved in his sudden passing. Who knows? He might have been annoying, but it got him noticed and he made a career of it. He sounded like a nice guy, and I'm sorry for his family. Weird week....weird MONTH for celebrity deaths.
