Gregg may have earned numerous title's in his life, but I've never seen anything to indicate him being a redneck!! Be interesting to read the article.

I will probably do the old walk into Borders Books, sit down and read that article and put it back on the shelf. I used to have a subscription but Rolling Stone went so down hill I finally cancelled about two years ago.

Actually i somehow got a free subscription a few months back and RS isn't a bad mag - they even had a decent amount of Beacon coverage. You wouldn't know it from that stupid title they gave Gregg, though.

If RS can call Gregg a "redneck", can the rest of us call RS Editor and Publisher Jann Wenner a politically incorrect term for a gay?

Considering the age of whoever came up with that headline and the tired, stale and silly "one of the founders of Southern Rock" title in regards to the ABB that has been around for so long, it's not that surprising that they used the word redneck.

As so many people have pointed out so many times, Ramblin' Man is the band's highest charting single. That tune doesn't exactly sound like Metallica or U2.

Not taking it personally, it's just a dumb title.

Gimme a break. It's not derogatory in any way. It's just a teaser, nothing more. Gregg's not a hippie either... Don't read it literally (clearly it's tongue in cheek), and don't take it personally. Or just grow a thicker skin.

I wonder if the gay community would take it as a just as a teaser and not the least bit derogatory, if some someone published an article with a title " Jann Wenner, the Flamming "Out of Closet" Editor and Publisher of Rolling Stone"?

Hopefully, whoever came up with the title of the Gregg Allman article is themselves a "Redneck, Hippy, Soulman", if they're not then they're just as guilty of stereotyping as anyone else, even if they're just teasing.

Redneck certainly is not a term I'd use to describe Gregg, but Hippy ... most definitely.

I also mysteriously started receiving RS for free(I think they got my address from ticketmaster.com, although I'm not sure) and it has gotten better over the last year, with a few exceptions(ie. the weird goth guy from American Idol). The thing is after a few months they sent me an email wanting payment. I got the situation straightened out, but just a heads up for everyone.

RS has never atoned for the hatchet job they did on the band, including Duane, which they chose to publish immediately after Duane's death.

I guess I'm kind of amazed at how the apparent definition of "red neck" has changed over the years. I remember red necks as those portrayed in that Jerry Jeff Walker song (" ... kickin' hippies asses and raisin' hell), or in that Charlie Daniels tune (... you tip your hat to this lady, son ...).

Personally, I blame Lynyrd Skynnyrd!

We had a chat in our office a few years back. We all recollected the days when long-hairs were "hippies" - who received beatings from construction worker types who just didn't like the looks of said hippies.

Of course, nowadays the construction workers are the ones with shoulder-length or longer hair!

The long-haired red neck! The red neck-hippie! The times, they are a changin'!

It's true they have had to do some revisions of their history, including going back and rewriting all of their original Led Zeppelin reviews, in which they skewered them mercilessly.

They sure have...that October 18/1990 feature on the band
by Mikal Gilmore was pretty darn respectful and loving. Arguably
the best profile ever of the Allman Brothers Band.
The contempt around here for Rolling Stone I find amusing. You
folks must not read a lot of music mags - I read them all and RS
is the best by a country mile.

If anybody saw Gregg filing his nails on Moogis, you know he's not a hippy. Hippies do NOT file their nails....EVER.
Not sure what show it was, but GA was definitely caught filing his fingernails on camera...PRICELESS, and proof positive that he is not a hippy.

most people have to file or cut or trim their nails at some point in time or else they would have "claws". I would say GA is a well groomed "Hippie" and some of the rest of us are too.

In Montana we do our nails with chain saws or stump grinders.
