I'll take Derek on slide on any tune... not that I don't think Warren's a great player. It's just that Derek is Derek.

Statesboro Blues might be the only song that I prefer Warren on slide to Derek. Well, that, Hoocie Coochie Man, and maybe a handful of others...

I'm gonna have to go with Warren on Statesboro...the versions I've heard recently, Warren has torn it up...not to say Derek doesnt, but Warren has a better tone when he does the leads for Statesboro.

With that said, neither of em can touch Duane's leads, though. On Statesboro, anyhow.

Man, I love those Warren "Dreams" ....

But I really love those Jack Pearson "Dreams" .....

But I'll tell ya, Derek has been kicking my ass all over the place since 3/20 @ The Beacon !!

Forget it .... I'm not choosing ....

I started to think that way also, but then Warren starts sliding around and I think, 'wait a minute. This guy plays a mean slide guitar.' So, now I don't think that way anymore. For me at least with these guys, I don't prefer one over the other, to me it's just a tonal difference-I love both styles.

I have been a fan and follower for years but have just recently been paying attention or should I say had the time to read these posts. I know you are discussing slide on Statesboro, but I have a question regarding Dreams. It seems to me that the last few times(2 times this year and 3 last year) I have seen and the last few recordings I have heard, only Derek has taken a solo.

Is this correct?

I have to say the solos have been amazing but I really liked the contrast when they both took solos. I especially liked it when Warren would do non slide for the first half and climax with the slide on the second half

It is funny. I prefer Jack on "Statesboro", but that's not an option. I don't know. I usually prefer Derek on slide in general. But moreso because of his tone. He's looser and freer. And I think Warren has more of knack to build his solos, without the slide, than Derek does without a slide. But the great thing is, the band keeps changing and in a year, I may not want to say that. Incidentally with "Dreams", I don't like having to choose, I want them BOTH to play a solo. Those 2001 summer versions where they both play a solo and split them between verses were phenomenal... Anyway, I think I'd prefer to hear Warren play slide on "Statesboro", it gives such a different feel when Derek has to play the "straight" solo, it's a little less predictable. - To be honest, I've been seeing them for so many years straight, that I'm a little tired of hearing "Statesboro" live now. I mean, it's a great song, and it's harmless because it's so short, but quite honestly whenever they play it (and they usually do) I just think, "Okay what are they going to do next?" hee hee...

I think that on "Statesboro" both Warren and Derek should play slide. They could do a duel guitar thing or make a harmony or something.

Derek.
I used to be a huge Warren fan until I heard a DTB show and got to see Derek up close at various shows.

You know when I first heard Warren when he joined the band around 1989 I said Damn!...Best slide player since Duane for sure. Now with Derek who has simply taken the world of slide guitar up another 10 levels, I'll take a Derek solo everytime over Warren. This is not a knock on Warren at all...Its just how completely over-the-top I feel Derek is playing right now. Dereks tone, phrasing and the ability to take you up, down, around and sideways with his playing makes it a no brainer...Derek, Derek and more Derek! I do like Warren on Dreams however, but Derek was born to play slide guitar. Hey, even Warren was quoted as saying "Derek is the best slide player on the planet".

peace

Yeah, Eddie, I couldn't put it better myself.

Although, sometimes I feel part of me is blown away by Derek because his playing with the ABB is still new and fresh, whereas I've been listening to Warren with them since 89. Or something like that...

I agree with Pauli. It's a great song, but it's time to give it a rest for a tour or two.
