Actor David Carradine found dead in Bangkok

BANGKOK Actor David Carradine, star of the 1970s TV series "Kung Fu" who also had a wide-ranging career in the movies, has been found dead in the Thai capital, Bangkok. A news report said he was found hanged in his hotel room and was believed to have committed suicide.

A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy, Michael Turner, confirmed the death of the 72-year-old actor. He said the embassy was informed by Thai authorities that Carradine died either late Wednesday or early Thursday, but he could not provide further details out of consideration for his family.

The Web site of the Thai newspaper The Nation cited unidentified police sources as saying Carradine was found Thursday hanged in his luxury hotel room.

It said Carradine was in Bangkok to shoot a movie and had been staying at the hotel since Tuesday.

The newspaper said Carradine could not be contacted after he failed to appear for a meal with the rest of the film crew on Wednesday, and that his body was found by a hotel maid at 10 a.m. Thursday morning. The name of the movie was not immediately available.

It said a preliminary police investigation found that he had hanged himself with a cord used with the room's curtains. It cited police as saying he had been dead at least 12 hours and there was no sign that he had been assaulted.

A police officer at Bangkok's Lumpini precinct station would not confirm the identity of the dead man to The Associated Press, but said the luxury Swissotel Nai Lert Park hotel had reported that a male guest killed himself there.

Carradine was a leading member of a venerable Hollywood acting family that included his father, character actor John Carradine, and brother Keith.

In all, he appeared in more than 100 feature films with such directors as Martin Scorsese, Ingmar Bergman and Hal Ashby.

But he was best known for his role as Kwai Chang Caine, a Shaolin priest traveling the 1800s American frontier West in the TV series "Kung Fu," which aired in 1972-75.

He reprised the role in a mid-1980s TV movie and played Caine's grandson in the 1990s syndicated series "Kung Fu: The Legend Continues."

He returned to the top in recent years as the title character in Quentin Tarantino's two-part saga "Kill Bill."

I hate to hear this, it makes me feel so bad. I have always been a big fan of David's.

R.I.P David (Kwai Chang Caine)

Very sad - especially if it was self-inflicted as this article reports. Hope David is at peace now. I always enjoyed him in Kung Fu and loved his more recent work with Tarantino in the Kill Bill movies and his Woody Guthrie portrayal.

Like Isaac hayes the year of Shaft, when Kung Fu first came on the year David got to experience being the coolest dude on the planet for a year. I wonder what that is like?

RIP Grasshopper. I fondly remember the exploits of the whole family. Father John always played a weirdo in a cheap black suit. My grandfather owned one 30 year old black suit which my dad (RIP) always referred to as the Carradine suit

Hell...I enjoyed his hosting of the--was it HISTORY Channel--"Wild West Tech" show of recent years....titled something like that. His brother did something similar but so did David. (?)

I was a huge Kung Fu fan in my youth, as were many here, I suspect.

Had not thought about David much after that until I saw him in Kill Bill 2.

His performance was masterful, to say the least.

Very sad.

RIP David.

I guess if you're depressed enough to hang yourself you don't have the energy to pick out proper "suicide" clothing

Agreed, It makes me wonder what had him so down. Having been suicidal a few times myself, I feel really sad for him. You have to be at the very bottom ,with no light at the end of the tunnel.

Bless and Forgive him Dear Lord, for whatever reason it was.......

It sounds like it was a bondage sex act gone bad. Rather it be that then suicide. Least you know he went out happy that way. Seriously though that is what they are thinking it might be. EVERYONE close to him at the present has said NO WAY would he commit suicide. But he was definately a freak amongst freaks. Remember when him and Barbara Hershey hooked up after Boxcar Bertha and were living in a teepee? Hell let's just remember Barbara Hershey. She was HOT!!!!!

Well, I am far from a Sunday school teacher, but I have never really
understood the attraction of bondage sex. But that's okay, to each his
own and more power to 'em. I support anyones ongoing quest for
a bigger and better "O". But bondage as a solo act? That doesn't make
sense to me.

I think that is what happened to Paula Yates' (ex Mrs Bob Geldof) boyfriend, singer from that Aussie band....

Kind of an un-dignified way to be found. this happens to alot younger guys usually. [one of my co-workers was found in a similar way] David was the same age as my father.

Just my opinion but without judging the practice I think it would be smart to not do it when alone. If you are with someone else they can rescue you if things go wrong.

The most recent thing I saw him is was Hell Ride, another Tarantino film, about rival biker clubs and avenging the 30 year old murder of a woman. The film was full of graphic violence, nudity and language. Carradine's part was small, but ultimately, his head ended up in a picnic basket. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWH-ZuflBRo

Very sad ending to a colorful life and career. Via con Dios.
