For those interested - the Charlie Daniels Band (that's what it says on the ticket) will be performing with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra tomorrow night at Caldwell Park on Birmingham's southside. Caldwell Park is the park across from the former location of John Carroll High School.

I'm not sure if Charlie is a guest soloist or if this is his show. Recent similar performances by Arlo Guthrie and Art Garfunkle make me suspect the latter.

I have tickets as part of a package, so I'll be there. Might be interesting.

Had a flash of Papa John Creach doing Stardust with Hot Tuna....
Doesn't morph into a picture of Charlie. Interesting billing.

WOW! That one brings back some memories! There was nothing as close to a '70's ABB concert as the original CDB! Charlie and Tommy Crain ( a Helluva slide player IMHO!) wailing on Les Pauls, Taz playin the heck out of that organ, and two drummers and charlie hayward driving the train! Thanks for that link John! I will be passing that one on today and visiting it often!

The Allmans, Charlie Daniels Band, the Tuckers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Wet Willie.....real music by real musicians, for real music fans.

I really, really, really hate disco.

My first concert...CDB opening for the ABB

Met Tommy Crain at The Hoopee Jam last weekend. He can still bring it

Hey John, Man Tommy's Crain's phrasing on slide was so close to Duane and to me was a Huge part of the CDB's sound. It has been sadly missing from Charlie's music for TOO long! It was one those I can name that player in three notes kinda things! First time I saw the CDB live was like '73 or '74 at Bell Auditorium in Augusta, My Bestest buddies from Greenwood (AKA the Kinfolk Band opened for the CDB!) Man the old building was rocking that night! I have been meaning to order Tommy & the Crosstown Allstars' Cd from HTN just haven't pulled that trigger yet! How was their performance? Been reading the Hoopee reports, but so far no one has said much about Tommy's band and their set! Oh and by the way the Kinfolk boys have been getting together once or twice a week for a couple of months at the little studio in G'wd that you said you cut some gospel tracks at a while back! ( the guitar player owns the building)Hopefully a cd soon ( 7 tracks done!)and back on stage by late summer. I'll let ya know when you and BDOB need come upstate for for some good ole home-grown South Wack R&R! Think - Tucker Boys, amazing Rhythm Aces, ABB - ya'll would definitely LIKE_A_Lot! Let me know some info on the Cross Town Allstars set!

I was takin' a trip out to LA, tooling along in my Chevrolet, tokin' on a number and diggin' on the radio......
Chuck can still bring it, although I prefer 'getting stoned in the morning, and drunk in the afternoon' to 'going to church in the morning and praying in the afternoon', but that's just me. The CDB was a very under rated band from 75-80. Except for with many of us.

I have quite a few fond memories with CDB. One year I spent 6 shows with them at Carolwinds. 2 shows Friday, 2 shows Saturday and 2 shows Sunday. We had stage passes and sat on stage most of the shows. I had a friend that was a radio DJ and he interviewed him, so that is how we got hooked up with the stage passes. Once while Tommy Crain was doing a solo, we were sitting on a big black stage box, Tommy came over motioned us up off that thing, we thought oh $h!T what did we do wrong. Turned out the box was a big cooler full of beer, he grabbed two, one for him and one for me. We thought that was so cool. I had that can for years, but after a couple of moves I lost it. We had our way around Carolwinds. The folks running the rides would see those stage passes and move us up to the front of the ride, like come on up let these guys through. They thought we were with the band, which hell we didn't care, it got us on the rides pretty quick.....lol

CDB came back a few straight years after that year. I got to know a couple of his roadies, who we shuttled back and forth from their motel, which through them I was able to get stage passes for any show I wanted. One year CDB was in town, ironically The Allman Brothers and The Marshall Tucker Band were playing at the original Charlotte Coliseu the same night. What an opportunity to see my three favorite all time bands on the same day. It was an amazing day.

My DJ friend always had a interview with Charlie lined up. I think I was the reason Midnight Wind LP was named Midnight wind. Cause I had asked a roadie what the name of the new up coming LP was going to be. He said its very top secret, but they are going to call it HAMMER. So I said something to my DJ friend about it and he asked Charlie, and oh hell, Charlie came up out of his seat and wanted to know how we knew that. Charlie got pissed. WHOOPS.......so needless to say, my radio DJ friend did not get stage passes anymore. lol
But I always did because I knew those Roadies. Needless to say the album came out and the name was Midnight Wind.............not Hammer.

I did see Tommy Crane and his band (Crosstown Allstars) at the Jam for George in Spartanburg a couple years back. They were pretty good. Tommy still ripped it. Sadly
Kerry Crease his bass player passed away earlier this year. That guy could thump too. I have not heard them since then, but look forward to seeing them.

Those run of albums, Fire on the Mountain, Saddletramp, Midnight Wind, Nightrider, WHiskey, Volunteer Jam, High Lonesome, Me and the Boys, Jam iii and iv, Full Moon, Million Mile Reflections could not be beat. There is some killer stuff on those. Like the Marshall Tucker Band, CDB could kick any bands @$$ on stage. Nobody but the Tuckers and ALLmans could touch them. I miss those days.
