Being from Indianapolis, this really blows. I used to watch Henry Lee in the clubs before I moved south. Then he had his moment of fame and it soon faded. He was always a great showman and a decent songwriter. I hope he's able to get his life back together. ~ BDOB

'I Wish I Had a Girl' singer arrested for meth

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Late-1980s pop artist Henry Lee Summer has been arrested in Indianapolis on methamphetamine possession and other charges.

Summer was arrested Tuesday after police say he threw drugs from his car during a traffic stop. Officers who tried to pull him over for not using a turn signal say they needed pepper spray to subdue the singer, whose real name is Henry Lee Swartz.

The 53-year-old scored two Top 20 hits in the late 1980s with "I Wish I Had a Girl (Who Walked Like That)" and his cover of the song "Hey Baby."

He faces one count of meth possession, one count of obstruction of justice and two counts of resisting law enforcement. He was released Wednesday from the Marion County Jail pending a May 12 hearing.

That is a tough one meth really is a life draining bitch. I remember his Hit song from 80's radio. I've always loved a pop song with a good hook and that song had it. I thought he might have had a few more in him.

I feel the same way Dave....

I played bass in Henry's band back in the late 70's before he hit the big time. I always felt back then he had a very special talent as a performer and songwriter. Back then he wouldn't think of touching any drugs or even alcohol for that matter. So sad to see him this way. I hope and pray he can find his way to get some help and straighten out his problems.

Knowing Henry as I do, his arrest will be the wake-up call he needs to get his life and career back on track. Lets hope his friends and family give him the support he needs right now.

Bummer for him, except that maybe the bust will save his life. That photo looks like meth has already taken its toll on him.

David Crosby in his book " Long Time Gone " said that going to jail saved his life .

From the mugshot it appears that meth has taken a toll on Henry. Heartbreaking what this drug can do. Hopefully this will be his chance to break free and turn around his life ... there are much worse damages this drug can wreak on a person's life than jail time ... believe me. I'm saying some prayers for Henry and for his loved ones, that they all find the peace and healing they need.

The left eye looks bad, but according to the story, they maced him, so that could be why it's so red and puffy.

Tom, I didn't know you played with Henry Lee. VERY cool. For a while, he had Rick Bennick and Michael Read from Roadmaster playing with him. He always put on a high energy show. He was on Arsenio many years back and did a cover of Treat Her Like Lady. He comes out working the crowd and said, "Stomp yo' hands! Clap yo' feet! Let's jam, let's jam, let's jam!" I searched for the clip but couldn't find it.

Here's a few clips of HLS in his glory days:

Around 5 years ago, being the idiot I am......I was around some folks who smoked it all the time. I tried it and smoked it on the weekends for about a month. It made me feel so good, I loved the taste of it when I hit that glass pipe. The crash of coming down was horrible. It would take me 3 or 4 days to feel normal again. I was only smoking a small amount compared to the others.

Anyway, it wreaked havoc on my mind and stomach. I got so scared that I wrote a letter to God and said that if I could get better...I would never, ever touch it again.....and I never did. I put that note in my Bible and it is still there today. The only reason I never tried it again was I felt like I would have lied to God.

Henry looks like some of those folks I knew at the time. Also, everyone of them had rotten teeth. I remember it would make my teeth hurt and I would brush them all the time.

I hope Henry gets his life on the right track.

I was way saddened to see it too. Henry obviously is needing help. He was a very good, high energy entertainer 20 some years ago; saw him a couple times here in Lafayette. I hope he gets help before it's too late.

I saw Henry Lee live at a half price fair in Nashville, Tn. right after he released his album that contained "Wish I Had A Girl That Walked Like That" & "Hands On The Radio". He was great live! I remember he kept talking about gettin' your mojo workin' between the songs! He hung around after the show and signed autographs. I bought his cd and he signed it to me and my wife at that time. He seemed like real nice guy. Later that year I seen him make his first national television appearance on Letterman. David interviewed him after his performance and Henry Lee was so hyper Dave started making fun of him. Oh yeah, the autographed cd I had left with my ex-wife in 2000! I miss that cd! LOL!

Sorry to hear about Henry Lee and certainly hope that he turn his life around. Never got a chance to see him live, but did enjoy the couple of songs they had playing on MTV/VH-1 at time (Wish I Had A Girl That Walked Like That" & "Hands On The Radio"). And you could certainly tell that Henry Lee was the type of a performer that knew how to get a crowd going.

it Don't take much to get addicted. It is a hard come down,
Drug Counseling statistics show it to have the highest rates of treatment failure where folks return to the drug.

(one of the few drugs more addictive than tobacco cigarettes by that statistic )

I used to smoke Marlboro cigarettes back in College but quit because I hated that "Hangover"

Limited my uppers to coffee for the most part.

I am glad to hear you have left that behind Dave.

I don't see how and don't want to know how anything can be worse than crack cocaine. Hope HLS can get his sh*t straightened out. Jail may be the only thing that will help.

Woah, meth (and crack) does a real number on your looks. Can you imagine what it does to your insides, not to mention your grey matter?
The worst thing about breaking this addiction is that it creates an overwhelming obsession to use. It's all mindfuck. Your body doesn't get addicted to it, but your brain does. Stay away from it long enough, and it eases.
Awful drugs.
Peach,
Lizzie

That was my comments, not Brother Dave. I'm sure he has more sense than to try that stuff.
