Here is a link to the Smokies, which is about 2 hours from us. Great place to adventure. Many other attractions around the park too. Asheville is not to far away either. Whitewater adventure abundant too. Hiking camping fishing, the Smokies has it all. Gatlinburg is pretty cool too, which is just outside the park. Make reservations far in advance, this place rocks (crowed) in the summer and fall months.

Nice choice, also try Cape Cod.
Here is my Grandfathers house that is available to rent. Great location, one block off the main drag and some great restaurants and shopping.

The Smokies are lovely! Wonderful place for camping, hiking, outdoor adventuring. And you could always split your vacation up ... start with some time in the mountains then head over to the coast for some beach and ocean time. I've found NC to have some of the most gorgeous beaches - clean and not crowded. Hop a ferry over to the Outer Banks for a day, catch a boat over to Bear Island and get away from everything.
How long are you planning for the vacation? Were you wanting a roadtrip type of trip? ____________________ "Come on down to the Mermaid Cafe and I will buy you a bottle of wine, and we'll laugh and toast to nothing and smash our empty glasses down..." |

My sister is from Denver so we get a lot of mountains. She does want a little beach time. I'm thinking road trip myself. Maybe fly to Atlanta, stop in Macon, Savannah. There's a nice sounding island 20 minutes out of Savannah called Tybee Island. Maybe then Florida, fly home out of Orlando. Or maybe up the coast to the Carolinas. We're thinking a week. |

Julie, your plan to fly into Atlanta and take a car trip from there sounds great. Savannah and Charleston have some good historical sights.
There are some beautiful islands off the Charleston coast. The Florida Panhandle beaches are the most beautiful I've seen. Sugar sand and
vast beaches. Atlantic coast beaches just don't compare. Ft. Walton Beach is very nice and Greyson's Beach, a state park I think. Some of
those Panhandle beaches have been rated no. i in the USA, even ahead of Hawaii.
Sounds like great fun with your sister and the girls.
Of course it's hot and humid. It's summertime in the South. It
seems to bother old people more, like you and me, Otie.
Oh, if you take The Smokies trip, Dollywood is a fun place for everybody.
If have a night in Atlanta, there is always some great music playing there.

If you can't stand the heat and humidity, come to Cape Cod!!! The Beaches are fantastic and if you wanted to go for a week you could even venture North to NH, Maine or Vermont all 2, 3 and 4 hours away from the Cape with plenty of beaches from North to South and everywhere inbetween!!! ____________________

Outer Banks, (Duck, NC)! Lots for kids to do and see! Pirates and shipwrecks, lighthouses, great restaurants, mini golf, driving on the beach, fishing, hiking, biking, kites, jet ski, Wright Brothers memorial, Dunes at Kitty Hawk, National Park service has free kid programs, beach picnics, and zoning out! ____________________ nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile... |

If you decide to fly to Atlanta, just hit 75 south and come through Macon and spend the first night here. From here you can go to Savannah, Charleston, Tybee, Jekyll Island, or even Jacksonville, before having to stop for gas. ____________________ All photos posted of family, friends, and places, including those of historic ABB value, by this poster are copyrighted by the poster, or posted by permission of the copywriter.

Agree! And if you're road tripping and in the Grand Canyon region, well Zion, Bryce, Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly ... there is a world of wonderment in this area of the country. ____________________ "Come on down to the Mermaid Cafe and I will buy you a bottle of wine, and we'll laugh and toast to nothing and smash our empty glasses down..." |

if you're going to be in the Savannah area, you need to run on up I-95. Check out Beaufort, S.C. The downtown historic district has horse drawn carriage tours (and walking too). Lots of Civil War history and many movies shot there. (Forrest Gump, The Great Santini, The Big Chill to name a few) Out at the end of 21 is Hunting Island State Park. Lighthouse is accessible and the view from the top is incredible. Savannah's downtown is awesome too. There's a Harley Davidson shop right off of south I-95 that some guy named Greg Allman has been spotted at. lol
Enjoy yourself no matter what you decide to do! ____________________

You really DON'T want to do Myrtle Beach. Way to crowded, way to much traffic, way to touristy, way to many outlet malls, ..... get the picture. There are many beaches up down the Carolina coastline (North and South Carolina) that aren't as crowded, not as touristy, and very family friendly. My suggestion is to find a beach in a central location, rent a beachhouse or condo for a week, and then take a couple of "day trips" from there to various attractions, in between spend lots of quality time on the beach.

My favorite vacations of the last 2 decades were taking my kids (when the older 2 still listened to me) to the Cape. Used to stay in Brewster (northern elbow) because of the bike paths built on converted railway lines |

Ditto this on Gatlinburg! After some relaxing time spent in the Smokies arrived here to a Vegas-like scene that didn't appeal to me personally. Best thing about Gatlinburg for me was when I got out of the tourist trappings to an off-road trail in the surrounding area. ____________________ "Come on down to the Mermaid Cafe and I will buy you a bottle of wine, and we'll laugh and toast to nothing and smash our empty glasses down..." |
