Someone explained to me that:
the young boy represents a vulnerable and innocent person contemplating abusing drugs, which are represented by the mushroom.

...and if he made the choice to do so....

the elephants-representing the consequences of the choice- were ready to tramble the essence and life from him.

The British version of the cover had stampeding elephants charging Dickey Betts...

I thought I heard or read some where either from Butch or Greg said it was going to be called Victory Dance, but they changed it thinking it might be viewed as a slap to Dickey.

That would be quite the anti drug statement by the band don't ya think? Although drugs (well, at least hard drugs) might not be there cup a tea these days I don't believe they are championing the anti drug movement.

I sent the following PM to Butch in Feb. of 2003 in regards to the Hittin the Note cover, his response is at the bottom of the message.

Hey Butch,

I was hoping that you might be willing to shed a little light on the new album cover. Did the whole band participate in coming up with a concept for it or did one just submit the idea? What does it represent to you? Do different members have different interpretations of the imagine? And so on...

Below are a couple of posts about the cover taken from the anything goes forum. The first one is my thoughts on the cover and the second is my good friend Michael Williams thoughts. Was kinda curious if we are thinking along the same lines as yourself and the band.

My Post:

I like the design. My thoughts on it are this: You have a young, innocent, curious, mushroom picking child (the band at its beginning) juxtaposed with the imagine of the wise, long in the tooth, strong and powerful elephants (the band today) that seem to be thriving and strong as ever in an area that appears to be harsh and barren (I believe that this represents the journey the band has been on and what they have had to survive). If this doesn't represent this band than I don't know what does. Although I love the past colorful and trippy album covers I am glad that they didn't go that route again because this is clearly not the same band that it was those many years ago when "Where It All Begins" and "Shades..." were released.

Michael's Post:

Ryan,
I agree with you totally, but I also think that the connection with Brothers and Sisters cannot be overstated. That album featured a small child playing in the leaves in a purely natural simplistic setting. It reflected the time period, which coincided with the end of the Vietnam War and the demise of Richard Nixon. Peace, love, and kisses, baby!! Similarly here we have a child playing again, but this time in a Wasteland setting, reflecting the turbulence and uncertainty of life in the 21st century. I think the elephants can certainly stand for the band. But there is a two fold meaning here. The cover defintely seems to be political. One can harldy help equating elephants with Republicans and they seem to pose a definite threat to the innocent child in the middle. Also, I think Butch may have influenced this cover immensely. We are all aware of the T. S. Eliot "Eat a peach" connection with the ABB. Eliot's most famous poem was entitled "The Wasteland" and reflected his concerns that life in the 20th century and in the aftermath of WWI was alienating--that we are living in a Wasteland. That sentiment seems to be echoed here, extremely apt considering that we are now posed with a similar threat of war and are standing on the brink of the 21st century. The child in the center, fidgeting with the mushroom, however, seems to offer some semblance of hope.

Take care,

Ryan Belair

Butch's Response:

You got it. We're trying to get away from the Disneyesque mmushroom cartoons that have been so common over the last few years. I like this image because of what it seems to be doing: getting people to figure out what we mean by it. I'm not going to talk about what it means to me. I love the fact that it has started a dialogue with yall. that's the point. And some good ones were made just in this post.

I thought the cover was just another "Paul is Dead" clue
