Today marks the 40th anniversary of the Kent State shootings.

One of the four students that were killed on that day was someone from my howmetown of Plainview, New York. His name was Jeff Miller, and the image of his body lying in the parking lot has become an iconic symbol of the peace movement. (See image below)

According to James Michener's book on the Kent State shootings, Jeff Miller's ambition in life was to be the Grateful Dead's third drummer. He was learning to play the drums, and used to spend his free time in the dorm room playing his drum kit to his Grateful Dead LP's (most likely Live/Dead, Aoxomoxoa, Anthem of the Sun and Grateful Dead). He also loved Crosby Stills Nash & Young.

THe other students that died that day were Allison Krause, William Knox Schroeder and Sandra Lee Scheuer.

Tellin' me I got to beware

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

Haven't forgotten this image or what happened in Ohio on this day.

I still find it hard to believe the way that all went down , so horrible , I can't imagine the pain the victims families felt .

Yesterday, German television (WDR) had a documentary on this American tragedy and it's aftermath and what struck me most was the fact that the parents of one of the deadly victims, who frequently started visiting Washington DC in search for answers why this happened, at one point were offered money to stop them from coming. "How much money does it take to keep you away?" or words of that matter. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
