What the heck function does this key perform? I assume
it stands for "escape", but has anybody ever successfully
used this key to escape from a crash, or a cursor freeze-up,
or anything.
Maybe "escape" has some other application that is useful,
but I don't know what it is.

It's like the ANY key. Just kidding...

I am pretty sure it started out as a key to communicate with peripheral devices like, for example, modems. It would initiate an escape sequence. Press the escape key and you could use the keyboard to issue commands to the actual modem, press it again and you were back to being able to use the keyboard to communicate with a running program or the operating system.

Later DOS and UNIX programmers would add it as an option within a running program to be able to escape (back up) out of "menus" and or to stop a program... similar to a control break which could "sometimes" be used to exit a running program.

Later, Windows started using it for keyboard shortcuts:

For example, By holding down the control key and then pressing ESC to bring up the start menu via the keyboard. Or hold ALT then press ESC to switch between open windows. It is now used for many short-cuts within Windows including Windows 7 and other Windows Software.

Don't think it was ever intended to help a System freeze like control Alt delete or control alt backspace.

YMMV

It's there so when you're looking at porn and hear someone coming it'll wipe it off your screen.

In CAD it gets you out of any command, and in any full screen video(you tube, hulu, etc) it goes back to normal web page.

Pushing it will not transport you out of the office and onto a beach, I've found. (Clicking heels together 3 times does not appear to work, either...)

I read the posts out loud to my mate.

I wasn't going to post anything.

I even left the page.

Then my mate mutters one of his rare attempts at humor,....

"It's an escape-from-reality, key"

OK
I'll buy That,.....I wonder if it'll work though,.....

If he's wiping it off the screen then I don't think he was only looking.

And who exactly did he hear coming?
