I work in Jersey City directly across the Hudson River from World Trade Center site. On 9-11 I had a front row seat of the destruction of the WTC from less than a mile away. Around 10AM today , you could hear the roar of a jet going by and people immediatly were looking out the windows to see what was making the noise. You know it had to be a big jet and not just a military fighter jet as I've seen and heard those go by the area as the Blue Angels or other military planes usually do fly-bys during the fastivities for Fleet Week here in New York. On the second pass the planes were clearly visable and flying WAY to close to the buildings at what appeared to be an altitude under 1,000 feet. This pass caused what can only be described as a panic run for the fire exits by everyone on my floor ( and I'm low in a 50 story building , only floor 8 but again lots of folks here were witness to 9-11 ) That this "excercise" was conducted with no prior announcements via radio , newspaper or internet or better yet from our own internal security. ( during Fleet Week we were notified that Jets would be doing fly bys on the Hudson as an example ) is well beyond unacceptable. People in the area are kind of spooked by low flying commercial size jets to say the least. There are lots of people that need to be Fired for this total Clusterf*ck. Any one else out there in my "neighborhood" for this complete fiasco this morning ?

NEW YORK (Reuters) An Air Force fighter jet and one of President Barack Obama's official planes on Monday flew low over the Statue of Liberty in an approved photo opportunity that startled some New Yorkers who have memories of the September 11 attacks.

New York City officials notified some businesses but not all city agencies or the general public. People in New York remain sensitive to such incidents in lower Manhattan, site of the 2001 attacks involving hijacked airliners that destroyed the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.

Many people left their buildings, and stock prices extended losses at the time.

The U.S. Air Force, which operates the president's plane, said the "aerial photo mission" involved an F-16 fighter jet escort and one of the Boeing 747s designated as Air Force One when the president is aboard. Obama was not on board.

Police said federal authorities told them not to disclose the information ahead of time but to direct inquiries to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA called it "an approved military photo op." The White House declined to comment.

"After our history with planes in lower Manhattan, you would think they would consider doing their exercises over the Potomac (in Washington) instead," said Peggy Lewis, who heard the planes from her Manhattan home.

The mid-morning flyover made traders jittery at the New York Mercantile Exchange, where they reported seeing the plane flying low over the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, banking, and repeating the pattern.

"We took it upon ourselves to leave the building. We asked police downstairs about it, and they said they didn't know anything. It could have caused some real panic," said Dominick Caglioti, an independent commodities trader who works next to the site where the Twin Towers formerly stood.

After the incident, the city released an advisory stating that the flyover was "part of an approved federal activity."

"We made the notifications to the city so they were aware that the flight would take place between 10 and 10:30 this morning," FAA spokesman Jim Peters said.

The World Financial Center across the street from the World Trade Center site did not call for an evacuation, although many tenants in the building decided leave. A spokeswoman said tenants were told the flyover was authorized and that there was no reason to worry.

NEW YORK (AP) A Boeing 747 used by the president was escorted over lower Manhattan by two Air Force fighter jets Monday as part of a government photo opportunity, causing a brief panic among office workers near ground zero.

Workers from several office buildings poured out onto the streets before they learned that the flights were innocuous.

John Leitner, a floor trader at the New York Mercantile Exchange Building, said about 1,000 people "went into a total panic" and ran out of the building around 10 a.m. after seeing the planes whiz by their building, near the World Trade Center site.

"Apparently, nobody in the building was informed that this was going to happen," he said. "Everyone panicked, as you can certainly understand."

He said the workers gathered along the Hudson River esplanade until a security officer with a bullhorn told them it was a planned exercise.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the government was conducting a photo op involving two Air Force F-16 jets and the larger airplane, a Defense Department version of the 747 that is called Air Force One when the president is aboard. It said it notified city law enforcement about the mission.

The NYPD said the flight "was authorized by the FAA for the vicinity of the Statue of Liberty, with directives to local authorities not to disclose information about it, but to direct all inquiries to the FAA."

Among the workers who left their buildings were some at The Wall Street Journal.

Kathleen Seagriff, a staff assistant in the news rooms, said workers heard the roar of the planes and then saw them from their windows.

"They went down the Hudson, turned around and came back by the building," she said. "It was a scary scene, especially for those of us who were there on 9/11."

Some staffers, who thought they made out an American flag on one of the planes, stayed behind. But she said most didn't want to take the chance.

Really foolish of them not to warn people ahead of time. I hope nobody got hurt during a panic situation.

I work in 3 Word Financial Center, adjacent to the WTC, just on the other side of the West Side Highway. They were making announcements in my building over the emergency response sytem that everything was okay and that the NYPD said its no cause for alarm. Although you could hear people in the office saying, "did you f'ing see that?" Many of the folks were here for 9-11 and have had that experience one time too many already.

Nice planning on the government's part.

Absolutely cruel and WASTEFUL!!!! Photo op?????? That's a lot of money during times like this... I work next to the Capitol in Florida and we even get scared now when planes get close out our windows - It was worse for us when Jeb Bush was there. You got an apology I see... I wasn't there during 911 and would have been scared to death if I saw what you New Yorkers heard and today! Just not right...

They could've just Photoshoped the picture and not scared folks. Must've cost taxpayers $$$$ to fly around in circles.

The military 'offical' that ok'd this should be re-assigned or fired. Obama screwed up. Not even Bush allowed this during his bonehead years.

Swift move, Barry!
