These advertisements were on the back of comic books. I admit when I was real young this used to freak me out, because those sea monkeys looked so hideous and scary!!

However I NEVER figured out what sea monkeys actually looked like because I was never allowed to buy these kind of things (strict upbringing). Anyone could tell us what Sea Monkeys were actually like?

That is exactly what I thought when I saw the name of this thread. I remember Sea Monkeys. A friend of mine had a window sill full of those.

I ordered them from the back of Boy's Life. Turned out to be brine shrimp, about half the size of a small ant. A royal scam. Now, those x-ray glasses were awesome. NOT!

In fact still do.

When I saw that Sea Monkey ad, it reminded me of the episode of South Park when Cartman orders a crapload of Sea Monkeys and mixes them with human sperm...to get "Sea People". It's the episode called "The Simpsons Already Did It".

ok, back to the regularly scheduled program:

Besides nearly always having at least ONE dog, throughout the years, I've had a couple of cats, a couple of hamsters than ended up being a community of hamsters, a couple of rats. But, now I just stick with dogs.

That"s funny because when I saw the ad, I thought they looked playful and friendly and that I was going to get some cute little pals to monkey around with.

You learn pretty quick about false advertising when all you receive is a package of dried brine shrimp instead of playful sea monkey friends.

Yes I did.

Also had a Whamo Magnet, a Major Matt Mason doll, a Fright Factory, Creepie-Crawlers, Lost In Space lunchbox, Famous Monsters Of Filmland, Creepy and other assorted cool stuff.

The fringe thick leather watchband was extra.

...those prawns didn't live long and the ant farm always ended up as an etch-a-sketch...'EARTHQUAKE!!!' Come on, admit it...bugs is bugs.

Dad ... my brother and I saved our allowance and actually sent off for
the submarine. I knew we couldn't really get it wet in a pond or anything,
but I did have visions of us being able to sit in it and pretend war games.
It came .. was pretty heavy-duty cardboard pieces that had to be assembled.
The main problem I remember was the connections... it came with these
heavy-duty paper clips... the kind where you line up the holes, insert this clip,
then bend flat the two tines on the backside. We couldn't get it to hold
together long enuff for much of anything... it soon got thrown out.

Chris Elliott had a TV show years ago ... "Get A Life" ... where he was a
35 year old paperboy still living with his parents, etc. The show sucked, but
one episode rang true for me... the one when he ordered that dang submarine.

Growing up we had a Guinea Pig. What a useless Pet. It was my turn to "name the pet".... so I Immediately went with "Killer". I was probably around 10.

"Hey Mom!... can we let Killer out of his cage and play with him?"

"No, he just gets loose and crawls under the couch. Just stick your fingers in his cage, he'll come over and nibble on them".

Speaking of sending away for things, I ordered this in the 70's and found it recently when I dusted off my LPs. It was pretty funny to my 12 year old mind! Game show answer to how many people the lived in their house, "one adult and one adultress."
