due to a series of computer errors, i have been forced to use this system..

i am not a fan..

among the many troubles i have are this sysytem not reading a new portable hard drive (every time i try to save to it, it tells me i have no space on an empty drive) and the fact that any jpegs i get emailed to me will not open ( it says there is a system error but will not tell me what ti is...

anybody know of any fixes for these or websites that might hold some answers ?

thanks

I have none of the problems you're mentioning, and have Vista on two PC's. Runs fine and is far more stable than XP. I have one that stays on constantly and can go months without a reboot.

Jpegs open from attached emails with something called Windows Photo Galery. Works great for basic viewing. I just double-click on the attachment or any graphic file and boom!, it's opened in half a second.

As to recognizing hardware, what's the device and the connection? Any USB connection should be trouble-free. If it's ESATA, it should recognize it just as easily.

Lefty, my only guess is that it might be the way the drive is/has been formatted. Older systems (like my dinosaur) run the drives with a phat32 set-up. Not a geek or anything (not the droolin, kind, anyway) but the other format might be NST ... Nah! I don't know!

I also find it weird that your drive tries to install a bunch of software when you plug it in.
Good luck with this!

Naw, that's not accurate. (32-bit) Windows can't deal with more than like 3.2GB, so it's pointless to have more than 4GB installed.

Most people will do just fine with 2GB.
2GB+ generally benefits Vista performance... but I've even run it on 1GB and it was usable.

32bit windows (XP and Vista) both handle upto 4 GB. There were some older BIOS revisions that would not address past 3.2GB... but most shouldn't have a problem with 4GB.

What type of drive is it? Who is the manufacturer? Does it work on any other system? Can you navigate to the drive using windows explorer?

Are you using a client to retrieve mail or are you just opening your email through a web page? An example of a client would be Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird. Can you open other image attachments?

Is this the case, I didn't see you say it did this (try to install programs). There are some drives that come with software on them to support soft virtualization, in which case Vista may not be allowing it to load properly.

Wish I could help. Stuff like that makes you want to hate on the computers, I know. I have Vista on my desktop and I haven't encountered any problems (I'm running on 4GB/750GB with 64bit quad core). Good luck with this ... Rosshmusic sounds like a good go-to guy for these questions!

Not familiar with Vista, but I wonder if running chkdsk would help. In XP it would check & repair disc errors while restarting.

Vista has an event viewer maybe that will tell us something, usually an error code and brief explanation.

Or maybe running sfc /scannow.

Curious, because I was just talking to someone earlier about running a 64-bit system; how are you making out in terms of software compatibility? Do you have 64-bit versions of programs you run (a rather limited selection, no?) or do 32-bit versions work ok?

I haven't encountered any problems so far, Fuji, but it's a fairly new computer (purchased this year) and already contained a lot of 64 bit software. I have loaded some stuff like Java, Mozilla, Adobe, Netscape and some firewall/virus software in 64 bit versions but really haven't added a lot of software. I'm not a gamer so not too worried about that kind of thing and stuff I could see myself wanting like SQLServer and VisualBasic are available in 64bit. My printer in compatible and so is my camera. So far no problems!

Lefty, I feel your pain.

You and I may be living in a parallel universe.

I was humming along on Windows XP until a few weeks ago when my PC died. I was on the DELL extended service plan and was excited when they told me they’d be sending me a new machine as part of their exchange program.

Little did I know the torture I would soon endure. The new machine came with Vista. I tried to keep an open mind, but my old monitor was blurry, I couldn’t load some of my software, and the machine repeatedly froze.

I spent countless hours on the phone with Dell trying to rectify the problems, but to no avail.

I told them I wanted to go back to XP.

They told me I can't load my XP discs from my previous machine onto this machine because it will violate my warranty, violate the Microsoft license agreement, and possibly make my system even more unstable. Oh, and it may not work anyway because those XP discs I own are specific to my dead machine and the product key may not work on the new machine. (But then they suggested I go ahead and try to install my old XP discs.)

But what is especially infuriating is that I asked them to take this Vista machine back and send me a machine with XP. They told me they can’t send me a machine with XP because they no longer have XP. But I look on their website and, because they've got so many complaints about Vista, they are selling machines with XP. But they still refused to send me one of those XP machines.

As far as I can tell, I (and perhaps you) have three options:

1. Buy a new Dell machine with XP for minimum $500 (I checked a few sites such as HP, Compaq, and ACER but could not find any manufacturers, other than DELL, selling XP. I believe lower end machines may still come with XP if you need only a low end machine, but I did not see any on the web.)

2. Buy a version of XP on eBay for approximately $90, install it, and hope for the best.

3. Buy a refurbished machine with XP on ebay

So I too have been pulling my hair out for the past two weeks and wasting TONS of time.

And yes, I am way more upset over this than I should be.

Good luck.
