Hell, in Virginia the lottery helps pay foe education, why not add marijuana to the mix. Seriously, legalization is way overdue. But as a person with a Libertarian bent, I think it should be left up to the individual states as to how they go about it. More local power, less Federal.

Santana: Obama should legalize pot
April 3, 2009, 6:02 AM EST

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) -- President Barack Obama brushed off a question about legalizing marijuana in his online town hall last month, but guitar god Carlos Santana says he wishes he would seriously consider it.

"Legalize marijuana and take all that money and invest it in teachers and in education," Santana said in an interview this week. "You will see a transformation in America."

During his online town hall on March 26, Obama fielded a question about whether legalization of the illicit drug would help pull the nation out of recession. Obama said he didn't think it was good economic policy, and also joked: "I don't know what this says about the online audience."

But Santana said making pot legal is "really way overdue, like the prohibition with the alcohol and stuff like that.

"I really believe that as soon as we legalize and decriminalize marijuana we can actually afford a really good governor who won't keep taking money away from education and from teachers and send him back to Hollywood where he can do 'D' movies and we can get an 'A' governor," referring to former movie action hero and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Even though it seems like the possibility is getting closer, I just seriously doubt this will happen in my lifetime...

I agree it makes sense, and the politicians would have a field day figuring out how to mismanage all that extra tax money.

In Florida, that is how they sold the lottery years ago..."it'll go towards education" what they didn't say was that the legislature then took other money away, because they were getting all that lottery money, so it ended up being a nit.

Saw this in the news. Carlos is right.
I voted for Barry O, but I was really disappointed at the way he laughed off what many feel is a very serious issue in his Townhall meeting on 3/26. I know there are bigger fish to fry right now, but his joke really sickened me.

If that is a direct quote from Santana..."really way overdue, like the prohibition with the alcohol and stuff like that." Way to help your argument by sounding intelligent and professional. <end sarcasm>

They can't make their money off the wars (mexico) if they legalize pot, the lawyers lose, the jails lose, too many people lose and only the common American wins. We can't have that. Legalizing pot makes waaaay too much sense to actually do it. Gain the tax dollars, control distribution, remove it from the police, lawyers, judges dockets? That just makes too much common sense. We can't have that.

Imagine the Newspaper Headline Possibilities:

"Obama ends Recession in a little over a Month!!"

"Legalized Pot revenue is more than we expected!"

"We'll have a surplus soon"

"Happy Days are here again"

Legalize but keep the government, at least the federal government, out of it all together. Taxing it creates regulations, which creates bureacracy. Just decriminalize it.

Same thing in Illinois with our "lotto."

Anyone see Carlos on Tavis Smiley Friday night, the 3rd. He has a
very spiritual and existentialist quality about him, and his views on nearly
any subject reflect that.
I think it was the last question... Tavis asked him how much longer he
planned to actively perform. Carlos replied that he intends to contribute
musically as long as his fingers and his soul remain connected, and at the
time that no longer is the case he will then pass the torch to "Derek Trucks
and cats like that".
That is my loose translation, but the gist of it.

There is nothing better in this world [well except maybe good passionate sex] than a few hits of good pot to relax after a stressful day. sadly I can't indulge until I retire. [random drug testing] at my job. its better than getting loaded on liquor or taking xanax or paxil, lexipro or any of that legal poison.
