Please. Let me settle this. During rehearsals in January we decided that to have our 40th anniversary and make it a tribute to Duane that no matter who sued who or what else had happened that we needed to invite Dickey to be there. We spent quite a lot of time writing the letter and Gregg, Jaimoe and I all personally sign it and then we FeExed it to him. I understand how hard this must have been for Dickey and it would have been nice to play a few for Duane. It didn't happen. Why doesn't matter. This is a complicated world we live in and no way can fully understand anyone else. I keep getting my butt into trouble believing that I can. "nuff said.

Mark didn't say anything - he was just sharing a message with us from Butch.

The band opened the door to Dickey. He just did not come thru it. It has been a long time and if he were going to show up for those shows, he would have needed to rehearse with them. He did not. Being fired is one of the deepest pains he has faced, and that is plain to hear in his solo song "Here Comes the Blues Again" off his Let's All Get Together CD. Hopefully at some point they can begin speaking. Butch has held onto that hope for 9 years doesn't that say something about what's in his heart?

I read on Dickey's site that a GS member said that Dickey was waiting for a phone call from Gregg and would only do it of he got one.

This jarred my memory to an interview Gregg gave around 1/10/09, he had this to say when asked about Dickey playing at the Beacon:

quote:
Ross CAT-The rumor mill is churning that artists like ERIC CLAPTON, ARETHA FRANKLIN and BOZ SCAGGS will join in the celebration of the ALLMAN BROTHERS music as well as honoring founding member your late great brother DUANE ALLMAN.
Is there any chance during the 40th anniversary tour that DICKEY BETTS will be welcomed back to perform with the band if even for just one night?

ALLMAN-There is no chance that DICKEY BETTS will ever be involved with anything to do with the ALLMAN BROTHERS Band; we’ve been down that road too many times and it just wouldn’t work.

I just wonder how much the original members actually wanted Dickey to accept the invite? I also wonder if there was a feeling of relief when he didn't respond?

I'd say a personally signed letter was an entirely proper way to invite Mr Betts. It would allow him some time to think about it and respond in his own time. We don't know whether he replied or not, and that was Dickey's call. I don't blame him if he declined, as that is his prerogative.

I wish it had happened, but maybe this is just a first step in healing the rift. The Beacon is not the only time they can play together, or have lunch or whatever. Just because the run was dedicated to Duane does not mean the others can't still work on the relationship as time progresses.

I'm betting the brown site is twisting their panties debating what is a "fitting and proper" invite.

I think it's **** ing ridiculous that anyone expects the people involved or their management to announce to the fans how, where, when, and why certain things were handled when it is absolutely none of their business.

It was a post by a fan who said he had talked to a GS member. Take for what that is worth.

Didn't the ABB only want Dickey back because he was once a seminal and important member of the band, and because he played beside Duane Allman? Isn't this mostly about
paying tribute to Duane?

What about Dickey's tribute?

Maybe Dickey cared a great deal about Duane but figures that now it really isn't exactly his place to CARE about a Duane Allman tribute. I'd imagine Dickey has given enough tribute to Duane at this place in time.

Would Dickey come to a show to pay tribute to Dan Toler, granted the guy is still alilve, but they also played together? Geez, the brotherhood is so much crapola at times. So Dickey's a BROTHER for a moment so he can pay his respects to Duane? The psychology of it all.

[Edited on 4/3/2009 by Tree__Frog]

I don't think Dan Toler is the guy you want to use as an example.

He kind of got screwed by his last employer who was........................................

umm

No reason to point a finger at Butch. Both sides have injuries, and none of us know all about it all. Enjoy the music you choose to enjoy, direct your hate at a terrorist, and eat a peach for peace.

The times I saw the ABB back in the day, Duane was already gone and Dickey was the man. Dickey deserves so much credit. He must have a giant ego and the ability to hold a grudge forever.

I can kind of understand his anger. They should have tried more things to help him. He was stabbed in the back by his supposed family. But I don’t know what really happened. I just wish they would get over it already before it’s too late, but it looks like Dickey may be taking this grudge to his grave.
